"Nutritonal Counseling at the Dental Visit"

Course Description:

Nutritional Counseling at the dental visit – Food for thought!

Dental hygienists are health care educators in the dental setting. Oral hygiene instruction includes diet and nutritional counseling for the prevention and/or treatment of oral diseases. We will define the impact of diet on oral health, look at dietary contributors to disease, assess patients for nutrition-related risks and learn strategies as to how dietary counseling may help to mitigate these risks.

  • Define the impact of diet on oral health
  • Identify dietary and oral health risk factors and provide counseling in the dental setting
  • Apply strategies to help patients understand how dietary changes may improve their oral and overall health

"OHI-FYI: An Update"

Course Description:

Brush-up on OHI - it's more than a toothbrush!

Oral hygiene instruction (OHI) for your patients should include assessment, motivational interviewing, technology and evidence-based approaches and recommendations for individualizing your patient’s home care.

Patient’s compliance with your home care instruction can be challenging but critical to gain and maintain optimal oral and systemic health.

Join us for an informational, educational and fun look at how we can create positive changes in our patient’s oral health at the dental hygiene visit.

  • Identify oral health care opportunities for their patients
  • Analyze and apply evidence based practices to guide oral health instructions
  • Apply strategies to improve your patient’s understanding of their oral hygiene behaviors

LeaAnne Haney, RDH, CPHDH

LeaAnne graduated from NH Technical Institute with her dental hygiene degree in 1980.  She was appointed to the NH Board of Dental Examiners in 1993.  She served a 5 year term, and was then appointed as the NH Dental Board Investigator until April 2017.  She has been a member of the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments for 25 years, assisting in dental and dental hygiene clinical board exams.  LeaAnne has worked for Northeast Delta Dental for the last three years as an Oral Health and Wellness Solutions Specialist, and most recently received her certification in public health dental hygiene.

Christa Keddie, RDH, BSDH, CPHDH

Christa graduated from Mount Ida College in Newton, MA with her dental hygiene degree in 2009. After practicing for a year, she returned part-time to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene and graduated in May 2015.
After successfully incorporating a caries risk assessment into her practice, Christa was ready for a bigger challenge. When she heard of the opportunity at Northeast Delta Dental for the Oral Health and Wellness Solutions Specialist position three years ago, she was thrilled that a dental benefits company wanted to incorporate risk assessments into dental practices.
Christa’s goal at Northeast Delta Dental is to make the PreViser® risk assessment the standard tool to be used on all patients before, during, and after dental treatment.

Stacy Plourde, RDH, MS, CPHDH

Stacy received her dental hygiene degree from NHTI in 1989. After working in both private practice and public health settings, she returned to Granite State College to complete her Bachelor’s degree and her Master’s degree in Leadership. She also has completed her Certified Public Health Hygienist certificate.
Stacy has served on the NH board of Dental Examiners from July 2006 - April 2017 and is the first hygienist to hold the position of Board Chair. She is a member of the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (formerly NERB), where she is involved in examining dental hygiene students for their clinical boards, and served as Dental Hygiene Member at Large of their Board of Directors from 2014-2017.  Stacy currently uses her wealth of dental experience and knowledge along with her leadership skills working as an Oral Health and Wellness Solutions Specialist at Northeast Delta Dental.
