Mass Timber in the Northeast: Fabrication through Construction

Attendees will be eligible for 6.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs or 0.60 ICC continuing education credits.

This unique bus tour will provide an in-depth look at the potential and opportunities for timber, including mass timber, construction in Southern Vermont, Southern New Hampshire, and Western Massachusetts. Over the course of one day, we’ll tour three facilities, chosen to collectively provide a deeper understanding of local wood products and how they’re being used. At Bensonwood’s fabrication facility in Walpole, NH, attendees will learn about the role of 3D computer modeling in precise timber fabrication for projects ranging in size and scale. At Allard Lumber, a solid sawn lumber mill in Brattleboro, VT, attendees will experience the entire wood fabrication process, from whole logs to finished product. Finally, we’ll visit the John W. Olver Design Building, a four-story mass timber facility at UMass Amherst, where members of the design team will discuss their approach and answer questions. The bus tour will also include presentations on the availability and characteristics of locally-manufactured wood products, national trends and project examples. Attend this educational event to see firsthand why mass timber is becoming a material of choice for sustainably minded design and construction professionals.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss typical fabrication and construction practices used on exposed heavy and mass timber construction projects.
  2. Highlight a variety of structural and architectural uses of northeast wood species framing products through an in-person tour of fabrication facilities and completed construction projects.
  3. Demonstrate detailing techniques used in mass timber projects, highlighting fire and life safety.
  4. Explain methods of fabricator/design team interaction that reduce costs and contribute to project success.

Lunch will be provided (select your choice as part of registration).

Tour Fee: $75

In the event of illness or cancellation, a full refund will be issued.
