Barrier Islands & Marshes: Life Cycles & Movement
Join us for a presentation by Mr. Frank Marshall on March 7 on a very fascinating subject: Barrier Islands & Marshes: Life Cycles & Movement
Mr. Frank Marshall (Graduate student in UNCW's Masters of Geoscience Program, Sediment Analyst at T.I. Coastal Services) will educate our Boat Club Members on the formation, changes and trends of barrier islands and marsh systems.
Topics will include:
- Life cycles of the islands
- Movement over time
- Responses to hurricanes
- Storm impact from Hurricane Florence
- Dredging and beach renourishments at Topsail and Figure 8 Islands
- Sediment entering the marshes
- What geologists are predicting for the long-term
Mr. Marshall spends most of his time researching "green" methods to stabilize and reduce erosion of shorelines in estuary environments.
This will be a 2-part presentation, free to Boat Club and Boat Care Program Members.
- The first part will be indoors from 3:00 to 5:30 PM on March 7, 2020 at the UNCW Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, 601 South College Rd. Wilmington, NC.
- The second will be out in the boats on Masonboro Island and in channels through area marshes. This is scheduled for 2:30 PM on April 4th, meeting at our marina at 96 W Salisbury Street, Wrightsville Beach. Look for further emails to register for this second event.
