“Girls” refers to gender expansive youth (cis girls, trans girls, non-binary youth, gender non-conforming youth, gender queer youth and any girl-identified youth).

Workshops for 2020

PLEASE NOTE: When registering for the Conference you will need to select 
ONE workshop for EACH session. There are three sessions. PLease review the workshop descriptions below and note the title of the workshop of your choice to help with registration. Please note that workshop changes on the day of the event may be possible but this is dependent on the number of attendees in each workshop.

Session 1:

Creating Healthy Relationships with our Food, Weight and Selves  Presented by Lauralee Roark from Beyond Hunger

Presentation and interactive discussion with adult and teen peer educators from Beyond Hunger’s eating disorder prevention program. Talk will include topics about body acceptance, intuitive eating and emotional intelligence. 

Sexplanations  Presented by Lizzie Alvarez from Huckleberry Youth

Join us for this session about how you can stay safe and strong in your relationships. We will talk about making choices, keeping boundaries, safer sex, like birth control and condoms, and making sure our relationships are ones that make us feel good about ourselves. A safe space to ask questions to get the information that will help you feel confident and prepared in your choices.

Navigating Healthy Relationships: A How to Guide Presented by Meghan Kehoe from the Center for Domestic Piece

In this workshop you will learn the tools for identifying signs of healthy relationships and the warning signs of unhealthy relationships. You will leave with a better understanding of how to create healthy and strong friendships and romantic relationships. You will also be able to educate and help your friends with their relationships.

 Let's Talk About Money! Presented by Sheila Schroeder from Private Ocean

Engage, Educate, Empower yourself on the five financial basics every teen needs to understand about money.

Strength in Diversity: Career Panel of Successful Women of Color Presented by a Panel of Dynamic Working Women of Color 

Hear from a dynamic panel of remarkable women of color who will share their experiences in a range of careers. Learn what these jobs are really like and how to get started in these fields or the one of your choice. This is an opportunity to discuss the strengths of women in the workplace, what advantages they bring, and challenges they face. 

  What is College Really Like? Presented by Current College Students

SATs, AP classes, and application essays are all on your radar. What about those other factors that can help you prepare for getting to college? What kind of higher education is right for you? Should you start at a community college or go right to a four-year university? What if your GPA isn’t that great? Are you emotionally ready for the realities of college life? Can you handle the workload? Are you the first in your family to go to college? What kind of college will be the right fit – will I know? Is it hard being away from home? Our panel of college “experts” – Marin high school graduates currently at colleges near and far.

Self Defense Assertiveness Training Presented by Liliana Gonzalez from Community Violence Solutions

Workshop to empower young women with assertive communication and self defense techniques to prevent sexual and interpersonal violence.

Becoming a Sexually Empowered Young Woman Presented by Luminessa Enjara from Sasse Girls

In this workshop, we will examine and question the confusing messages that the media and advertising are telling teenage girls, about what it is to be a sexy and sexually empowered girl today. What do these words really mean for you?  How can you step more fully into them in a more authentic way? Through discussion and visual arts, we will explore these words and begin to redefine them so that you can discover for yourself how you can embody and step more fully into being a sexually empowered young woman.

Expect Respect Presented by Natalie Boskin  from Shalom Bayit

Want to be a better friend and partner? Want to learn how to communicate boundaries and have healthy relationships? This session will be your space to talk about what’s right for you in friendships/relationships and how to make it happen. Topics include what we do and don’t want in friendships/relationships, how to identify your comfort zones in relationships (boundaries), the difference between healthy and abusive relationships, and more.

 Social Media Pressures & How to be Yourself Anyway Presented by Henia Belalia from About-Face

Moving from education into action: In this fun workshop from About Face, we’ll look at how messages on the Internet, social media, movies, TV shows, and ads/commercials can affect how you feel about yourself. You’ll learn the techniques companies use to sell you products, and how social media posts sell ideas to you. Then, we’ll problem-solve: what can you do about it for yourself and to make social change? You’ll get everyday tools you need to fight back against pressure to be someone other than your true self.

 Ask a Sexpert Presented by Elis Herman from Planned Parenthood

What’s the best type of birth control? How does someone know when they’re ready to have sex? Is blue waffle really a thing? Everyone has questions about sex and sexuality, but it can be difficult to find accurate, understandable information on these important topics. In this workshop, three professional sexuality educators from Planned Parenthood will answer your sex questions. Ask anonymously or out loud. This is a safe space for all questions great and small!

Ladies in Law: Personal Safety, Street Smarts & Partying Practices Panelists include Central Marin Police Officers, Marin District Attorney, Lori Frugoli and Probation Officer, Melissa Davis .

In this “Safe Space” and without judgement, ask the questions you have always wanted to ask about the legal system. This will lead to conversations around teen issues like personal safety, social media dangers and the rights and responsibilities of an emerging adult.


 Session 3

Taking Control of your Unique College Path: A Girl Power Guide   Presented by Dr. Amy Morgenstern and Stacy Johnson

What if we told you that college admissions don’t have to be a chore – that it could instead be an opportunity for personal discovery and growth? What’s the secret? Taking control of your unique college path! Believe it or not, you can be yourself and get into a great school. 

This interactive workshop will help you cut through the mixed messages about what colleges look for and avoid the stress of feeling like you need to do a million things to be “well-rounded.” The fact is, colleges are interested in students who focus on a few key interests and related activities. Admissions can be much more creative and flexible than you think! 

 Human Trafficking 101 Presented by Vanessa Russell, Executive Director of Love Never Fails and Sable Horton, Survivor Leader

This workshop will teach girls about the different vulnerabilities that can lead to human trafficking. The workshop will include tips on how to use social media in a safe way, how having a positive self-image can actually help fight against human trafficking, how you can imagine yourself as a superhero, and so much more.

 Menstrual Advocacy: Awareness and Empowerment Presented by Helynna Brooke co-founded the Red Web Foundation

Radical understanding of your menstrual cycle. How to revolt against cramps and period discomfort by knowing what your body needs; boycott products that are not good for you; how to advocate for free products in your schools and understanding by teachers when you need to dash to the restroom.

 Career Possibilities: How Do I Get There from Here? Presented by a Panel of Successful Women in Empowering Careers.

Hear from a dynamic panel of remarkable women who will share their experiences in a range of careers. Learn what these jobs are really like and how to get started in these fields or the one of your choice. This is an opportunity to discuss the strengths of women in the workplace, what advantages they bring, and challenges they face. Each woman will offer her advice and insights on why now is the best time for young women to soar in their careers! 

 Shine with public speaking: Interview skills for the win! Presented by Lisa Schulman

Whether it's for a job interview, a college interview, or a speech in class, public speaking skills lead to success in life. Learn the secrets to speaking comfortably and confidently in front of others, while having fun doing it.

It's Jeopardy! Sex Ed Edition Presented by Elis Herman and Kellen Kaiser

Put your sex ed knowledge to the test in a rousing game of sex trivia, Jeopardy style (but with teams)! Our questions will cover a range of topics, from STIs to sexual orientation to the latest in sexual health news. We’re taking high school sex ed to the next level, and this time, there will be prizes.
