KEYNOTE SPEAKER: BELLA BIKOWSKI
Dr. Bikowsky is a Child & Adolescent Clinical Therapist and an Educational Staff Associate Certified School Counselor with a Ph.D. in Educational Counseling/Psychology. Bella has extensive knowledge working with school teams and districts in helping to create systemic change using the Multi-Tiered Systems approach capitalizing on evidenced-based interventions such as Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, Restorative Justice Practices, Trauma-Informed and Culturally Responsive Practices, Social-Emotional Learning, Mental Health integration into the school systems, and Function-Based Assessments and interventions.
KEYNOTE: JUNE 9, 2020 The focus of this session is on Restorative Justice Practices and how to adapt these core principals to create and promote culturally responsive and inclusive classrooms. Educational and Clinically-trained presenters will provide information and specific culturally responsive strategies for how to take a proactive, restorative approach in building classroom communities to ensure that students experience a positive, consistent, safe and equitable classroom. Attendees will also practice implementing restorative community circles as a way to promote positive classroom and social behavior development. Finally, de-escalation behavior strategies with a specific focus on individual conferencing through a restorative lens will also be discussed. Attendees will leave with tools and protocols to support implementation of these principals and interventions for their school context.
Breakouts with Bella: June 10, 2020 (Morning) The focus of this session is on learning how to accurately assess the function of challenging behavior in school contexts and using that information to create sustainable behavior intervention plans that are contextually appropriate. Educational and clinically trained presenters will provide information on tools that school staff can utilize to conduct functional assessments that include both indirect and direct behavior data. Attendees will also learn about how to develop behavior intervention plans that utilize evidence-based practices to support behavior change.(Afternoon)Often in schools, we lack the focus to communicate effectively amid getting things "checked off" the ever-growing list of must dos that accompany any educator's role. According to Dr. Brene Brown's groundbreaking research in the area of leadership, one of the most powerful tools in any relationship is effective communication. This session will focus on how to overcome the barriers of meaningful communication through having tough conversations with honest feedback. The goal of addressing these barriers is to cultivate conversations with staff, students, and families that help to increase transparency and handle strong emotions.
