Sleep Disorders and the Eight Extras, Case Studies and Pulses

Did you know that the Eight Extraordinary Vessels regulate psycho-emotional states?  Of course you didn’t, we did not learn that in depth in TCM school!  Did you know that the Channels of Acupuncture and Eight Extraordinary Vessels can help treat things like sleep disorders? Interested in learning more?

Join us November 20 to 21st, 2021 and dive deep into TCM psycho-emotions with Dr. Yvonne Farrell!

In this 2 day seminar, dive deep into the nature and pathology of the Eight Extraordinary channels of acupuncture like never before, including psycho-emotional aspects of each system, enhance your learning through cases, techniques and practicum with Dr. Farrell.

Day 1 - Sleep disorders and the Eight Extras - Saturday November 20, 2021

Day 1 of the 2-day weekend seminar will focus on sleep disorders from the Eight Extraordinary Vessel (8EV) approach. This course will cover both the TCM and biomedical understanding of the physiology of sleep and then explore the patterns associated with insomnia and some select parasomnias. Participants will be reminded of the value of restful sleep and the dangers associated with sleep deprivation. In addition to the TCM and biomedical understanding of sleep, we will also cover the benefits of the 8EV in the treatment of chronic, debilitating sleep disorders. We will focus on the unique nature of the 8EV to access resources for sleep. We will also explore the effect of the 8EV on the curious organs, especially the brain and the 5 spirits, to support restful sleep.

  1. Participants will review and deepen their understanding of the biomedical theories underlying sleep disorders.

  2. Participants will review the common TCM patterns for Insomnia and correlate those patterns to an 8 Extra approach.

  3. Participants will be able to diagnose and choose points for sleep disorders from the perspective of the 8EV and 5 spirits.

  4. Participants will develop a more refined ability to diagnose and treat difficult patients.

Day 2 - Sleep Disorders and Cases - Sunday November 21, 2021

On Day Two, Dr. Farrell will cover several cases that clinically demonstrate the information provided in the previous day. Dr. Farrell with also teach pulse-taking as a meditation and introduce 8 basic pulses that are associated with 8EV pathology. Participants will be able to ask questions about 8EV point selection, technique and potential outcomes and prognosis. Demonstrations and supervised practice will be offered to anchor the information to make it more clinically useful.

    1. Participants will be able to identify 8 basic pulses indicating 8 extra pathology.

    2. Participants will create treatments for specific cases and explore how to adapt treatments for their own patients.
