With adherence to the social distancing guidelines, and other safety measures set by the governor of Maryland, this seminar will be held in person at Beaver Creek Country Club. Attendees will be required to wear a mask and maintain a 6’ distance. Should the guidelines change, restricting an in-person seminar, our plan is to offer this training remotely so you will be able to meet your ethics licensure requirement. Social distancing requirements limit registration to 64 attendees.

Annual Clinical, Legal & Ethical Issues Seminar

Domestic Violence: Law and

Mental Health

Friday, September 11, 2020

Beaver Creek Country Club

8:30 am - 11:45 am  (3 Hours/CEUs)

Check-in:  8:00 - 8:30 am            Training:  8:30 - 11:45 am

This program will provide 3 hours of continuing education in ethics, law, professional conduct and risk management to satisfy Maryland liscensure requirements.

Spousal abuse and violence have major legal and treatment implications for the perpetrator, victim and their children. Spousal violence includes possible physical aggression, verbal aggression, emotional and mental injury, coercive control, daily family volatility and insecurity, frequent disruptive moves and homelessness. Legal response to domestic violence can include emergency petitions, protective orders, criminal assault charges, divorce proceedings, custody orders and child abuse and neglect intervention. Mental health professionals are often called upon to provide treatment to domestic violence offenders and victims. They are also asked to recognize domestic violence when it may not be obvious and underlies the presenting problem.

Participants will learn how to identify and recognize domestic violence in its multiple forms. Discussion will include the implications of domestic violence for treatment, responding knowledgeably when a client is involved in legal proceedings related to domestic violence, and how to contribute effectively if required to become involved in any legal proceeding.

At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Identify legal issues related to domestic violence when treating perpetrators or victims
  • Discuss specific legal & ethical obligations including consent to treat, confidentiality, duty to report and treatment alliance
  • Explain how clinicians may become involved in court proceedings
  • Outline risk management strategies when treating clients in high conflict situations/relationships
  • Explain the difference between giving fact testimony and expert testimony
  • Employ best practice strategies when testifying in court
