VIRTUAL GROUP CLASSES: class size of 8, meets virtually on Zoom Monday-Friday 3-3:45. Packets will be shared to email addresses in google drive along with the recurring Zoom meeting link.  Students need a camera, even a cell phone (there is an option to rent one from me for 3 weeks with home delivery to Boston families only), a computer and Zoom.  Students share their assignments with bigpicturearthouse@gmail.com in google drive for reviews.  Ages are 11-15. 

Free editing tools for computer Afterlight, Darktable, Polarr and GIMP.  For iPhone: Snapseed. Photo files should be in jpeg format.

On Friday we pick a winning image!  The winner gets a $15 Amazon gift card.

May 4-May 8, Photo Fundamentals & Storytelling with ImagesIn this class we will tell our "Quarantine Story".  We will review the storytelling approaches and concepts: Internal subject matter, External subject matter, Metaphor v Literal expression, Symbolic imagery, Myopic look at a subject v looking at the Big Picture.  Each day we will apply a fundamental photo tool like composition, use of lighting, decisive moment, negative space, perspective.

May 11-15, Photos and Music:  How imagery, creativity and thoughts are influenced by sound.  We will make a photo to be the cover for our favorite album.  We will listen to three distinct types of music and sounds and make corresponding images.  Students should have music ready to play while they share their final series of images to one song or a mix of sounds/songs on Friday.

May 18-22, What is Art: We will look at the cost of art and how we place value on it as we make our own imagery.  The focus will be own creating your brand with photo challenges applied daily like lighting, context, composition, angles, subtext. We will study Vivian Maier black and white street photo and how her rolls of film and negatives went unseen her entire life and how no museum or gallery would support the man who eventually found them. We will look at the documentary The Cost of Everything and discuss should art be in museum, homes?  Is a child's drawing art and how do we place monetary value on it.  This class includes optional watching Finding Vivian Mair and the Cost of Everything on Zoom 2 nights at 8pm Monday and Wednesday. I will try to get it on my laptop and share the screen.  Otherwise we will be rogue and I will point my computer camera at the TV.

REMOTE LESSONS: learn individually at your own pace with personal lessons and critiques.

BASIC PACKAGE: 3 lessons with multiple samples, exercises and assignments with personal critiques for one student.  Each lesson has multiple teaching points.  Also included is 6 weeks of unlimited questions via text, email, Zoom, messenger, phone (your choice). Lessons and critiques are done in Zoom unless you have another virtual chat preference.  Jenny will help you set it up. Lesson folders are delivered in Google Drive. You can use your own camera, rent one from the program or even use a cell phone. $115.  

• Intro to Photo packet includes all the building block tools to make great imagery as well as portraiture, using lines and patterns, focal point, video tutorials and choosing backgrounds .

June 22-26: Photo Assignments 1 with Jenny see below

June 29-July 3: Photo Assignments 2  with Jenny Each day students have a different photo assignment while we explore the Hidden Gems of Boston.  Examples are: portraiture, landscape,  journalism, still life, travel, black & white, fashion. Two days will be spent on making proper exposures using our f-stop, shutter speed and ISO.

CLASS IN ROWLEY, MA AT THE CLARK SCHOOL, June 29-July 3: Photo Essentials with Jeph Ellis, $495 Jeff will review the basic tools for creating strong work by teaching lessons in composition, lighting, focal point, subject matter and foreground/middleground/background. Jeff is a FT art teacher at the Clark School, muralist and photographer.  Field trips to such places as Salem Willows, Rockport and more. 

July 6-10: Developing Your Own Sense of Style Using Foundation Photo Tools with Jenny Students will learn to put together images that express their point of view and artistic style using the building blocks of photography.  Foundation lessons like composition, lighting, and foreground/middleground/background as well as lessons in symbolism, close, medium and wide shots, and focal point. We will think about how when put together the images give us a broader, rich story. Sample field trips to Fort Revere, Charlestown, North End. 


July 6-10:  Photo 101 with Stephanie We spend the week focussing on the foundation tools for making great photos like foreground middle ground background, composition, lighting, framing and more.  Sample field trips to Copley Square, Boston Common, Eastie marina and Castle Island.

July 13-17: Class & Culture  with Jenny Students will capture the same things like markets, parks, cars, gas stations, people, families, restaurants in various neighborhoods that are distinct by economic and cultural differences.  This will give us a visual comparison of different communities.  Sample field trips are to Beacon Hill, Eastie, Lynn, North Shore are like Rockport or Gloucester.  We will vote on both locations that deliver the diversity we are looking for but also choose some spots to have fun.

July 20-24: Seascapes and Cityscapes: Salem, MA at the Old Town Hall

July 20-24: Fashion & Portraiture  We will use the street as our background focussing on using natural light, posing, working with subjects and choosing backdrops.  We will also take a couple days to stage and shoot our own fashion sessions around the city and learn how to approach fashion photography. Sample trips to Eastie Marina, Salem, Underground at the Ink Block.


 July 27-31: Working with Natural Light & Choosing Backdrops with Jenny We will explore proper use of light to highlight subjects, create mood and pleasing aesthetics.  We will also look at choosing the right backdrop to frame and enhance your subject.  Sometimes the backdrop comes first and then we wait for the right moment/subject to enter it. Sample field trips to Copley Square and BPL, ICA with boat ride to Eastie and Fort Revere.

July 27-31: Street & Documentary with Stephanie Students will learn to observe and then capture an image which speaks about the location they are in using tools like composition, decisive moment, motion in photos and black and white imagery. Sample trips to the Skate Park, Downtoen Crossing/Boston Common, Castle Island.

Aug 3-7: Summer in the City  with Jenny We will explore all the hot spots in Boston capturing both locals and tourists.  Lessons will be in journalism, composition, decisive moment and symbolism in photography.  Sample field trips to North End, Castle Island, Boston Common & Charlestown.

Aug 3-7: Coastal Boston with Stephanie This workshop takes us to waterways around Boston like "40 steps" in Nahant, Revere Beach, Castle Island, boat ride to Eastie from ICA.  Each day will have a photo challenge as we review and reinforce 2/3 rule of composition, black & white imagery, texture & landscape.

Aug 10-14: Surprise Surprise with Jenny  - We are going to kick it Old School like we did when Big Picture first started in 2012. And NOT PLAN AHEAD. Technical and aesthetic tools used to express ourselves with our work will be explored.  All lessons and trips will be decided on the spot each day in order to keep creative juices open and flowing and not restricted.  We will only go places we all agree on. 


Aug 17-21: Simmer Down 1 Our vibe is reflection and winding down our summer.  The pace will be slower and field trips will be to peaceful spots like Nantucket Beach, 40 Steps Nahant and the Public Garden.  Each day will have a core lesson such as 2/3 rule, perspective, lighting, framing and foreground/middleground/background.
