ICCER Webinar: Indigenous Health & Continuing Care in Rural Northern Alberta

ICCER is pleased to present a webinar with Dr. Nadine Rimmer, Keyano College. Dr. Rimmer will present on her project, Indigenous Health and Continuing Care in Rural Northern Alberta

About the webinar: This project consists of a facilitator’s guide for nurse educators of varying levels. The guide will include a review of Indigenous history and cultural sensitivity with a focus of providing care for the Indigenous client in varying environments. Using case studies developed by a team of educators that are based on real people, concepts are introduced and discussed to provide culturally sensitive care. This care will include knowledge about different complimentary therapies such as traditional medicines, smudging, and including family and elders in support and care. Awareness of common health challenges within Indigenous peoples and the appropriate linkages to social determinants of health will round out the information. These scenarios have the capacity to be used by other disciplines such as social work and prehospital care.

Our speaker:

Dr. Nadine Rimmer (RN, DNP) has been a registered nurse for 32 years and has loved every minute of her career. She has been teaching at Keyano College in Fort McMurray, where she obtained her nursing diploma. Nadine feels fortunate to work with such an inspired team and hardworking students. Her nursing career has included medicine nursing, critical care, leadership, and education. Nadine is Indigenous (Manitoba Metis Federation) and her doctoral project was researching and developing strategies to assist in Indigenous nursing student success. Other than her passion for nursing and teaching, Nadine is a mother of two grown boys and has been married for 30 years. She doesn't like to be still, so has taken up painting, playing the cello, and quilting these past 2 years, but her true love is golf. Nadine is pleased to be able to present her work on caring for the Indigenous elderly.
