ICCER Webinar: Human Factors in Healthcare

ICCER is pleased to present a webinar on June 24 with Jonas Shultz, Human Factors Specialist, HQCA. This 3-part webinar will discuss the role of human factors in care environments with a focus on quality and resident safety.

About the webinar: Human factors is the study of the interrelationship between humans, the tools and equipment they use in the workplace, and the environment in which they work. Part 1 will provide a general overview of human factors, including the introduction of this scientific discipline into healthcare in Alberta. Our speaker will also share how this body of knowledge can be used to design or evaluate healthcare processes, information, equipment, and environments. Parts 2 and 3 will be held this fall and will focus on applying human factors to enhance medication safety and facility design.

Jonas Shultz (MSc EDAC) works as a Human Factors Specialist with the Health Quality Council of Alberta. He is also an adjunct lecturer with the Department of Anesthesia, University of Calgary. Working over the last 14 years in medical human factors, Jonas has provided human factors expertise to a variety of healthcare organizations, including AHS, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, Health Canada, ISMP Canada, CSA Group, as well as the Center for Health Design and Clemson University's Center for Health Facility Design and Testing in the US. The majority of Jonas' work has focused on evaluating the design of built environments for healthcare, such as hybrid operating theatres and ambulances, minimizing human error during medication administration, evaluating medical devices, as well as testing usability and comprehension of visual displays. Jonas has published his work in peer reviewed papers, influenced provincial and national healthcare facility design standards, and has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international venues.
