Advocacy is word that many of us use in the work of disability and inclusion, particularly for employment services, but few might comprehend all of the levels that advocacy really entails.  John and Ivanova will share what advocacy means to them, and how EVERYONE plays a role in being true advocates for people with disabilities.

Learning Objectives (Info, tools, and skills attendees will receive):

• Learn how to be better advocates for people with disabilities
• Understand the workings of our local, state, and federal government
• The importance of knowing and connecting to your legislators
• How the judicial system affects policy
• Learn about some historic rulings in the disability movement

 

*Please note: Wise maintains registration and attendance records for our events and training programs. Attendees that fully participate in events and/or complete training programs will receive a certificate to document  full participation as back up for billing purposes.  Wise is required to monitor participation in our courses and provide reports to our funding sources so that they may utilize these records in the course of their audits of programs. These reports may include actual time spent by attendee name, event/training title, county and state. Reports are provided to ensure there is documented proof of the appropriate use of government funds for the purposes of professional development.

John Lemus

John Lemus has worked in the I/DD community for 16 years as a policy and systems change advocate. John currently works for AtWork! As an activist/advocate in Spokane WA. John Is also a 2020 UW LEND Trainee and works for the UW Center on Human Development and Disability under their Autism ECHO project. John also serves as the 2^nd District Commissioner/Vice Chair of the City of Spokane Human rights Commission. In 2014, John was awarded the National Tom Miller award for Advocacy by SourceAmerica. John also serves as the Current president of People First of Lilac City and was the 1^st youngest state board president for people first of Washington in the organization’s history.

Ivanova Smith

Ivanova Smith is activist advocate, for Atwork!, anemployment agency in Bellevue Washington, and University of Washington Leadership Education Neurodevelopmental disabilities LEND Faculty. Ivanova is a leader in the Washington state self-advocacy movement; they are chair of Self Advocates in Leadership (SAIL.) They are on the board for the Washington state APSE Chapter and member of People First of Washington.They are happily married with a two year old daughter. Ivanova’s first years of life were spent in an institutional orphanage in Soviet occupied Latvia. This experience is increased their passion for civil freedoms and liberty for all citizens and workers with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Language: Ivanova uses both identity and people first language. They value both with their unique histories. They use them interchangeability throughout the presentation because they arespeaking on intellectual disability experience along with autistic experience.
