OSD Virtual Summer Camps

Ohio School for the Deaf will be transitioning all Summer Camps to Virtual Camps for Summer 2020 due to the current public health circumstances to ensure the highest level of safety for students and staff. Virtual Camps will be facilitated by OSD educators with small group support from OSD staff. Students will have a variety of Virtual Camps to choose from to ensure continued engagement throughout the summer months.

OSD Virtual Camps will include 2-3 hours of online instruction from educators, supplemental enrichment activities, and ongoing support from OSD staff. A connected device (laptop, tablet, etc…) with internet connection will be required to participate in all Virtual Camps.

We look forward to hosting students this summer for our first Virtual Camp and providing ongoing opportunities for our students to learn and grow!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • The virtual camps at OSD are open to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, and are in grades 3-12.
  • Read all sections of the registration form; you must click the Add button to add camper's information. Registration is not complete without the camper information and camp enrollment. Email osdsummercamps@osd.oh.gov  with any questions or problems during the registration process.
  • The deadline to register has been extended to Friday June 12.
  • Registrstion is FREE for all of our virtual summer camps.

THINGS TO KNOW

  • You must ADD your CAMPER'S INFORMATION as part of the registration process by clicking the Add button located right after the Parent/Guardian Information section.
    • To register multiple campers within one family, click the Add Another button found at the bottom of the previous camper's information.
  • Once you've entered all of the required information, including all campers information, click the Register Now button. You will receive an automatic message on-screen to let you know your registration was successfully submitted.
  • A confirmation email of your submitted registration information will be sent to your email (from the Parent/Guardian Information section). If you do not receive the email shortly after registering, please check your spam folder.

OSD's Virtual Summer Camp Offerings

ASL Music Performance (grades 8-12)

June 22-26, 2020

 

This camp will provide students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing with an opportunity to create music videos in American Sign Language They will learn skills in lyric translation, storyboarding, performance, and video editing. Students will discuss the difference between conversational and artistic ASL. They will collaborate online with other students to create their music video. Students should have proficiency in reading English as well as receptive and expressive ASL.

Helpful supplies or resources to participate in this camp:

  • Experience using online learning tools such as Zoom, Schoology, Flipgrid, and iMovie.
  • Electronic device like a phone or tablet
  • Tripod
  • Tripod adapter for recording videos

Explorer's Club (grades 4-8)

July 6-10, 2020

The Explorer's Club virtual camp will provide students the opportunity to explore and learn more about the great outdoors. While we often think the great outdoors are only at national parks, there are many great things to learn in our own backyards. This camp will give students opportunities to learn about nature including animals and plants, in a fun and educational way.

Basketball Camp (grades 3-6)

July 13-17, 2020

This camp will help provide a foundation built on the fundamentals of basketball like dribbling, passing, shooting and defense through a week of engaging video tutorials and live face-to-face calls. The drills taught through videos will keep the student busy improving their basketball skills throughout the summer.

Virtual Temp Driving License Prep (2 week camp) 

June 1-5 & June 8-12, 2020

(For high school students, ages 15.5 - 22 years old* )

If the student has received their high school diploma, they are not eligible for this camp regardless of their age. Students must not have exited special education services in order to participate in this camp.

This virtual course will provide instruction to help prepare Deaf and Hard of Hearing students for the temporary driver’s license exam. 

Students will receive direct instruction using American Sign Language (ASL) with two co-instructors. Additional small group or one-on-one tutoring will be provided. Virtual instruction will be done online via using Google classroom and zoom conferencing platforms.

Daily Tentative schedule

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM Large group sessions (40 minutes long with 5 minute breaks)

12:00 Noon – 12:30 PM – 30 minute lunch break

12:30 – 2:00 PM – Students join small breakout groups and activities

DeafPlus - Bake Your Way Through Summer (grades 7-12)

June 8-12, 2020

This camp is specifically designed for students who are deaf with additional disabilities.

This camp will focus on functional cooking nouns and verbs often found in recipes (vocabulary); how to read a recipe and follow it step by step (reading comprehension); and cooking measurements (math). Each camper will receive a "baking box" with dry ingredients for each recipe; a modified recipe; measuring cups and spoons; and a few cooking gadgets. Campers will connect twice a day:  once in the morning to review the fundamentals of reading and executing the recipe of the day and once in the afternoon to "bake together". Campers will have access to a google classroom full of independent supplemental games and flash cards relating to recipes; task check lists for setting up and cleaning up the kitchen; and the recipes themselves. Come join us as we learn how to read recipes and bake together during this unique time in history!

  • Basic baking supplies like a mixing bowl and large spoon.

Intro to ASL (grades 4-7)

June 15-19, 2020

Do you want to learn more ASL, American Sign Language? This ASL summer camp will be a mix of fun and educational learning with other kids to do fun activities together!  We will expand the language by doing classifiers, new ASL basic signs, ASL stories, ASL Music, and many more fun activities!   Come and join the fun!
