ZOOM Seminar:

Positive Behavioral Approaches to Reducing Childhood Noncompliance and Defiance

The presenter will be live during the ZOOM seminar and able to answer questions with program participants. Presentation materials will be emailed prior to the seminar.

Friday, October 2, 2020

8:30 am - 11:45 am  (3 Hours/CEUs)

Registration is required by September 29th

This seminar will focus on behavioral approaches to managing and reducing defiance and noncompliance in children. Clinical vignettes will be used throughout the training to provide real-world examples of how children display noncompliant and defiant behavior. Emphasis will be placed on research-tested and supported approaches to address this common symptom presentation of childhood. Clinicians interested in evidence-based approaches to disruptive behavior disorders (including oppositional defiant disorder) are the target audience for this presentation. Participants will receive a brief tour of the major treatment manuals designed to guide clinicians through this approach, as well as a focused overview of the behavioral principles that are theorized to reinforce and sustain children’s noncompliance.

At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Explain behavioral principles of noncompliant behavior among children
  • Discuss parent management approaches to noncompliance
  • Summarize targeted literature review of pertinent research of the effectiveness of parent training
  • Learn evidence-based approaches to address noncompliant and defiant behavior

Featuring:

Carisa Parrish, PhD, is a faculty member at Johns Hopkins in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She specializes in improving emotion regulation in children and adolescents. Her clinical interests emphasize practicing and promoting evidence-based care, including parent training for noncompliance in childhood and adolescence, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and acceptance and mindfulness-based interventions to improve self-regulation. Her research program has focused on investigating the development of emotion regulation in youth, and the role of social context and relationships in shaping children’s emotion regulation and psychosocial adjustment. Over the past 5 years, Dr. Parrish has expanded this interest to focus on parent and child adjustment to medical stress.

Dr. Parrish received her doctorate in Developmental and Clinical Psychology from the University of Maine. She completed her predoctoral internship training at the Children’s Hospital at Stanford & Children’s Health Council. She completed a postdoctoral clinical fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.  Dr. Parrish is a licensed psychologist, director of training for the Pediatric Psychology postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins, and co-director of the Pediatric Medical Psychology program at Johns Hopkins.
