This workshop will focus on best practices in identifying and working with victims of domestic violence for mental health providers. We will explore the unique characteristics of victims of domestic violence, their experiences, how to develop a concrete safety plan and how to assist the client in making strength based choices for themselves and their children. We will provide information on the legal aspects of domestic violence; what is an order of protection, the process of obtaining an order of protection, and how an order of protection helps a victim of domestic violence. Special attention will be paid to safety planning via telehealth/strategies around supporting people during the COVID crisis and resulting quarantine period. |

About the Presenters
Regina Mysliborski is a New York State licensed Mental Health Counselor. Regina has been working at the Retreat since 2011 providing supportive counseling to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in both residential and non residential settings.
Susan Bereche is the Staff Attorney at The Retreat and represents clients in Family and Supreme Court actions with a concentration in legal matters relating to protective orders; custody and visitation issues; and child support applications. In addition, she assists and advises clients with regard to other legal issues which arise in the civil and social service context. Prior to joining The Retreat, Susan was an attorney in private practice and also an Assistant District Attorney assigned to the Sex Crimes Unit of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office. As an undergraduate, Susan worked in the Flushing Human Service Center of Catholic Charities assisting social workers provide services to the local community.
