2020/2021 Basic Rubber Technology Course

Truly one of the best values TLARGI has to offer!

Typically this is a (in-classroom) 20-week course (comprised of two 10-week semesters) however, due to COVID, we will be moving to a safe schedule using webinar format. Certain group on-site activities, such as plant tours will be canceled. If (when) major advancements in COVID prevention come to fruition, the class schedule will revert to the original in-classroom style.

This year we will have a single 15-week semester schedule with classes starting Thursday August 27th, 2020 and will be held weekly each Thursday until December 17th, 2020. Live webinars will be scheduled for 5 PM to 7 PM (pacific time) each Thursday. Those attending the live Webinar will be marked present, however those students that have conflicts will be able to watch the webinar recording (for that week) and then take an exam, in order to be marked present. Student’s emails are required before the class start date and access to a computer with internet and typical conference platforms such as ZOOM Conference will be necessary for every student.

Because this is a virtual class, each student must have his or her own computer with Internet access.

The computer must be able to run Zoom, the on-line platform we will use for instruction.

Webcams are optional, but a microphone is required.

If you or your employees have never attended, we recommend enrolling this fall. Whether your background is operations, sales, technical, finance, or management, it provides invaluable training to further your success in the rubber industry.

The course will provide a comprehensive introduction of the following topics:

  • Designing with rubber
Focusing on polymer selection and recipe ingredients

  • Formulating with rubber
Using workshops to translate specifications into real rubber recipes that are created and tested

  • Compounding with rubber
Demonstrating the mixing methods and compounding strategies for organic and silicone elastomers

  • Fabricating with rubber
Using plant tours at local rubber companies to understand molding, calendering, extrusion, and dip processes

  • Testing with rubber
Understanding physical test methods with state-of-the-art equipment through in-lab workshops

Other highlighted topics include: Rubber industry overview and history, silicone rubber, rubber-to-substrate bonding, recycling, latex, foam/sponge, mold building, rubber test methods, and more.

  • A live-interactive and friendly class-conference style allowing students to ask questions

  • Instructors that strive to keep the subject matter light, practical, and interesting for all rubber industry professionals (whether novice or experienced)

  • Class materials provided are a class textbook “Fundamentals of Rubber Technology” written by R.J. Del Vecchio (ACS Publications, 2003) and class materials (in electronic format).

Attendance is crucial. In webinar format, attending all class sessions will be required, preferably live or by watching the recording with exam. If you have a scheduling concern, please contact the class instructors, Rick Ziebell at (562) 373-6982 or Matt Rogers at (562) 373-6979, they work to make this class possible for those that have busy work schedules.
