Course Description:
This lecture will discuss human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and its associated lesions with an emphasis on cellular transformation to oral squamous cell carcinoma. We will describe the clinical and histopathologic features of these lesions and the significance of the HPV vaccine to dentistry in order to aid oral health professionals in educating their patients. Finally, we will discuss the lesion proliferative verrucous leukoplakia and the pitfalls in its diagnosis and treatment.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the clinical and histopathologic appearance of HPV induced lesions and how the papillomavirus transforms a cell.
2. Discuss and the public heath significance of this common infection and the impact of the HPV vaccine.
3. Review the entity Proliferative Verrucous Leukoplakia and its link to squamous cell carcinoma.
Speaker Information:
Dr. Basile received his DDS degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and completed a one-year dental residency at the VA Hospital in Washington, DC. After practicing dentistry for three years, he began his oral pathology and research training at Harvard Dental School, becoming a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and graduating with a degree in Oral Biology in 2002. Dr. Basile was a Post-Doctoral research Fellow at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, NIH, in Bethesda, MD before his current position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland Dental School in the Department of Oncology and Diagnostic Sciences. He is also a member of the Molecular and Structural Biology branch of the Marlene and Stuart Greenebaum Cancer Center at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Basile has been a board certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist since 2008.

The Attention Rating is calculated automatically through the Webex system and reported to our team at the conclusion of the program. In order to receive the highest rate possible, stay logged into the training for the duration, do not minimize the training screen, and do not open other screens on top of the training.
An evaluation will be emailed to you within two business days of the program's completion. You will need the access code announced at the conclusion of the program in order to complete the evaluation. Once you complete and submit this evaluation, your certificate will automatically generate to be saved or printed.
