Self Advocates In Leadership (SAIL): Who we are as a coalition with Jessica Renner & Ivanova Smith
Join Jessica Renner, Advocacy Coordinator of SAIL, and Ivanova Smith, SAIL Chair, as they explain the history, vision and work currently being done by the Coalition. The presentation will give participants an understanding of how self advocates have and are working to improve the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities systems in Washington State, was well as ideas for how allies, advocates and service providers can support these efforts and become part of the movement.

*Please note: Wise maintains registration and attendance records for our events and training programs. Attendees that fully participate in events and/or complete training programs will receive a certificate to document full participation as back up for billing purposes. Wise is required to monitor participation in our courses and provide reports to our funding sources so that they may utilize these records in the course of their audits of programs. These reports may include actual time spent by attendee name, event/training title, county and state. Reports are provided to ensure there is documented proof of the appropriate use of government funds for the purposes of professional development.

Ivanova Smith is activist advocate, for Atwork!, anemployment agency in Bellevue Washington, and University of Washington Leadership Education Neurodevelopmental disabilities LEND Faculty. Ivanova is a leader in the Washington state self-advocacy movement; they are chair of Self Advocates in Leadership (SAIL.) They are on the board for the Washington state APSE Chapter and member of People First of Washington.They are happily married with a two year old daughter. Ivanova’s first years of life were spent in an institutional orphanage in Soviet occupied Latvia. This experience is increased their passion for civil freedoms and liberty for all citizens and workers with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Language: Ivanova uses both identity and people first language. They value both with their unique histories. They use them interchangeability throughout the presentation because they arespeaking on intellectual disability experience along with autistic experience..
