The presence of immigrants has challenged all levels of life in every community in the US. There is currently an acute need for knowledgeable clinical services available to our new neighbors and clients. This workshop features hands-on close analysis of individual case studies of immigrants, with focus on the impact of the current legal immigration climate on social emotional functioning of clients and families. As well as an overview of the impact of the legal system, specific clinical diagnoses and treatment modalities will be considered, and an opportunity to share knowledge of available resources will be provided.

Who Should Attend: 

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field.    

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn about the political and cultural background of Latin American immigration
  • Participants will learn about the migration experience of recent Latin American immigrants
  • Participants will learn about mental health issues including trauma affecting Latin American Immigrants
  • Participants will examine and reflect on their own family immigration story and factors influencing their perspective
  • Participants will learn about effective culturally appropriate trauma informed treatment techniques and modalities.
  • Participants will utilize a small group discussion format to explore specific case examples, utilizing workshop learning to develop a case conceptualization and treatment plan

About the Presenters

Dr. Katherine Mitchell is the owner of East End Counseling PLLC in Sag Harbor, NY and an adjunct professor at Wurzweiler School of Social Work. Dr. Mitchell is a New York State Licensed Clinical Social Worker in practice since 2007. She is a working social worker providing counseling to the immigrant population of Eastern Long Island, returning veterans and their families as well as substance abuse counseling. In 2017, she participated in a joint effort with the Cardozo Law School immigration clinic sending MSW and law students to the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas to assist with the mental health component of preparing asylum seekers for credible fear interviews. She earned a PhD in Social Welfare from Stony Brook University, New York in 2017. 

Daniel Hartnett, LCSW is a bilingual clinical social worker, born into an immigrant Irish family in the Bronx, NY. He has completed degrees at Fordham University, Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, Huntington, and SUNY Stony Brook. He has studied Spanish and Latino culture in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Mexico. He was a founder of the New York Immigration Coalition in 1988 and was an intern to the chief lobbyist of the US Catholic Bishops Conference during the legislative immigration reform of 1990.  He has worked as a clinician with immigrant women in the ICE Detention Center on the US-Mexican border in Dilley, Texas. For the past 20 years, he has worked as bilingual school social worker in the the East Hampton School District, and is in private practice serving children and families on the east end of Long Island.
