Virtual Workshop: Fly Fishing and Tying Demystified

How often do we stop and observe bugs hatching above and below the water surface? How much do we know about our local rivers? Join us for a virtual introduction to fly tying with Edible Outdoors. John Motoviloff who wrote the book on fly fishing in Iowa and Wisconsin and Eric Cabunoc a passionate fly fisher, will talk about fly fishing philosophy, safety and its relation to conservation. A Jay Winter (20+ years of experience teaching fly tying) will give us a hands on fly tying instruction. Registration cost will cover the fly tying materials you will need (which will be sent to your home!) for the hands on instruction. We will wrap up the class learning about a few favorite fish cooking techniques. This class is geared towards adults and is open to everyone regardless of experience. You don’t want to miss out on this unique class!

Instructor Bios:

A Jay Winter has worked all over the US with natural resources and has been with the Iowa DNR for the past 23 years.   He has been fly tying and fishing for many years and specializes in catching the fish that are available, which usually means bluegills and bass in the Midwest.   Fly fishing adds a whole new element of relaxation to the outdoors and allows you to catch a fish on something that you made.   It is easy to be successful, you just have to try.

Eric Cabunoc is a DIY enthusiast and home chef. He enjoys the outdoors spaces and diverse ingredients that Californina has to offer. As an urban dweller Eric loves to get out and connect with nature as much as possible to help inform a way to connect city living and experiences in nature to design a certain lifestyle he and his partner can enjoy.

John Motoviloff is the Wisconsin Recruitment, Retention, and Reactivation Coordinator for the National Wild Turkey Federation. He is the author of “Fly Fisher’s Guide to Wisconsin and Iowa” and the wildfoods cookbook “Wild Rice Goose and Other Dishes of the Upper Midwest.” He  fishes, hunts, and forages in southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa, and built a cabin near the Mississippi River out of old 100 year barn timbers.
