Program Overview
Persons struggling with substance use disorder (SUD) were already challenged with navigating social and systemic impediments to accessing care and navigating these impediments has become exponentially harder during this pandemic. People with SUD are at particular risk of infection by COVID-19 and its associated complications, care and recovery will be impacted by social distancing measures, and many will have to battle indirect risks of the pandemic that arise from factors such as housing instability, incarceration and reduced access to recovery support services. This symposium is designed to assist the participants in becoming more familiar with these challenges and better prepared to treat patients with SUD during the pandemic and beyond. In addition to presentations by three addiction psychiatrists, the Director of Opioid Response for the State of NJ will present in order to expand the scope of our attendees' knowledge base beyond the clinical component by offering information about the State's comprehensive and integrated approach to SUD.
Program Learning Objectives
1. Apply knowledge gained from the NJ Department of Health regarding opioid-related data trends to their delivery of care and identification of treatment options and recovery strategies;
2. Approach treatment from a perspective informed by both the psychology and neurobiology of addiction;
3. Teach patients to navigate recovery by identifying systems available and barriers that exist; and
4. Recognize the ways in which the consequences of COVID-19 have impacted and changed the delivery of care to individuals with SUD.
