How Did You Get That?  Improving Open Response Answers in Math: Strategies for Traditional Classrooms and Remote Learning

Grades 2 to 8

For math teachers, department heads, principals, supervisors, curriculum committee members, and special educators

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course, using the nationally known and research-based Collins Writing framework, provides educators with practical classroom strategies and teaching techniques.  The Collins framework is designed to improve the quality of student engagement, and teacher feedback, as well as develop critical procedural skills, conceptual understandings and vocabulary, and problem solving expertise. Imbedded in the course will be strategies for both traditional classroom instruction and remote learning as well as ideas to involve parents and guardians. This course will guide teachers as they plan and implement strategies to strengthen their teaching and use alongside any published math program.

COURSE GOALS

  • To understand the role of retrieval practice and feedback plays in deepening long term memory
  • To explore how improving number fluency and vocabulary in math frees up cognitive space for problem solving
  • To introduce a system to break down problems, understand their structure, show thinking efficiently, and develop stronger reasoning skills
  • To boost confidence in teachers’ mathematical understanding as they strive to balance rote procedures with the “why” of math

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Implement ten critical strategies to boost engagement, deepen understanding, and improve performance on open-ended math problems
  • Identify and effectively teach critical math vocabulary and graphics that build background knowledge and allow students to communicate ideas clearly and efficiently
  • Build a collection of authentic problem-solving assignments that are motivating and well-designed to build, reinforce, and apply mathematical understanding
  • Learn four engagement strategies for teaching in both the classroom and in remote learning situations: Talk Moves; Chat with a Neighbor; Check/Add/Star; Show Me
  • Include writing as an instructional tool to elicit and expand student background knowledge and find useful online resources that help with remote learning
  • Use clear, focused criteria for evaluating open response answers
  • Use common language and strategies across all grade levels and content areas
