Disarming Despair: Supporting Those Who Grieve with Susan Hedlund, LCSW, OSW-c, FAOSW

Please join us for the upcoming training, Disarming Despair with Susan Hedlund, LCSW, OSW-c, FAOSW on Wednesday, May 26th from 8:30am-4:30pm. The training cost is $110 - Includes six CEUs from MHACBO. All proceeds go towards the VOA Al Forthan Scholarship to support students who come from families impacted by addiction.

Purpose

This interactive workshop will consider the many aspects of grief that affect individuals and communities over the course of one's lifetime. Understanding different losses, the process of grief recovery, and the variables that can complicate grief will be considered. Interventions to assist people who are grieving will also be presented. Special acknowledgement of grief related to the pandemic and systemic racism will also be included.

Susan Hedlund, LCSW, OSW-c, FAOSW

Susan Hedlund has been an oncology social worker in the health care field for over thirty years. She is currently the Director of Patient & Family Services at the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Sciences University and is an associate professor at the Schools of Medicine and Social Work, and a Senior Scholar for the Center for Ethics. She has a background in program development for services for cancer patients and their families and has spoken and written extensively on care for people with serious illnesses, most recently in the Oxford University Press Handbook of Oncology Social Work, and Oxford’s Textbook of Palliative Care and Social Work. She is a past president of the Association of Oncology Social Work, received their leadership award in 1999, the Oncology Quality of Life Award from the American Cancer Society in 2009, and the Sojourn’s Award in Palliative Care from the Cambia Foundation in 2013. She currently represents AOSW on the Commission on Cancer.
