Registration is FREE and limited to MCA Members

Presenter:

Janet E. Fine, M.S.

ABOUT THE COURSE:

A Holistic Approach to Victim Advocacy: Exploring Needs and Desired Outcomes for Children & Families  This session will provide a holistic framework for understanding the core needs of individuals impacted by abuse and violence and the central role Advocates play in helping families achieve desired outcomes regarding safety, healing, and justice. In addition, participants will explore the strengths and challenges of their role as an integral member of MDTs, the importance of ensuring seamless coordination with their victim advocacy colleagues and promoting “big picture advocacy” wherever possible.

Who is My Client? Understanding and Addressing the Co-occurring Needs of Children and Their Caregivers  This session focuses on the co-occurrence of child abuse and domestic/intimate partner violence and polyvictimization in families served by CACs. It will enable participants to examine the central role of Victim Advocates in addressing the complex needs of non-offending caregivers and the challenges of doing so in the context of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) child-focused response.

Exploring the Impact of Work-Related Trauma Exposure - Building Resilience  CACs serve individuals who may have experienced multiple forms of trauma historically and presently: abuse, violence, immigration, poverty, racism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression and discrimination. Victim Advocates (indeed all MDT members) can better respond to the needs of their clients, and address their own needs in the process, by employing a trauma-informed approach that requires being vicarious trauma-informed as well. Understanding  and addressing vicarious trauma individually and organizationally enables us to build resilience, sustain ourselves, and ensure the delivery of consistently high-quality services.
