ARE YOU MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR PENSIONER DOLLAR?

If you’re on a pension you will know that making every dollar count is crucial, however thankfully there are many ways to save money and you might be pleasantly surprised by the number of discounts and rebates that are available. Here are some of the basics:

If you have a Seniors Health Card you may be able to receive some of the following through your state government:

  • a discount on your medical and pharmaceutical bills
  • a reduction in your household utility bills and transport costs
  • a discount on education and recreation fees

Contact Centrelink to make sure you are getting the maximum use out of your card and contact your relevant State Government Department to see what you may be eligible for.

The Council of the Aging (COTA) is a not-for-profit organisation which operates in most states of Australia and offers a rewards and savings program for people over 50.  You can contact college essay help online to find out more information and get the weblink to your home state office.

Most shops and service providers will offer pensioner discount rates so don’t be afraid to ask any business if they offer a “senior’s discount”.

If you have a private pension then you will probably already have an accountant or financial advisor.  Make sure you are getting good advice from them and don’t be afraid to shop around and get advice from other sources.

Talk to your bank regularly to make sure you are getting the best possible deal on your fixed term investments and that your accounts are not attracting unnecessary fees.

If you’ve been with the same insurance company for years, perhaps it’s time to get some other quotes to ensure that you’re still getting the best possible deal.

As a senior, the chances are you already have substantial experience when it comes to cutting costs at home. If you don’t, you’ll find plenty of tips online – and keep your eye on our blog for more updates.
