Falls Prevention Webinar

Please join Right at Home of Northern Virginia as we host Sara Pappa of Marymount University for a very important and educational presentation on Falls Prevention for Older Adults.

Falls are common and costly, especially among Americans age 65 and older. Every second of every day, an older adult suffers a fall in the U.S.—making falls the leading cause of injury and injury death in this age group.

By attending this presentation, you will learn:

-Importance of fall prevention

-Causes of falls

-How to protect your loved ones

Sara Pappa is an Assistant Professor at Marymount University in Arlington where she works with the regional falls prevention initiative, including management of the Northern Virginia Falls Prevention Alliance. She teaches in the Health and Human Performance department. In a previous role, she worked as a Public Health Project Manager at the Fairfax County Health Department, managing public health projects at the local, regional and state levels.  Her experience includes implementing and evaluating health promotion programs and policies; media outreach and public relations; grant research, writing and administration; budget development and management; coalition development and leadership; volunteer management; public speaking; fundraising and strategic planning.

In 2018, Marymount University was awarded a second round of Administration for Community Living (ACL) funding to continue to implement evidence-based falls prevention programs and create an academic-community partnership to facilitate community partners working together to offer falls prevention programs to older adults. The Northern Virginia Falls Prevention Alliance (NVFPA), as part of this effort, began with fewer than 10 members and has grown to over 100.  The multi-sector group works to create sustainable community partnerships, establish awareness campaigns, engage in advocacy activities, and facilitate collaborative efforts to sustain fall prevention programs across the region.

NVFPA Mission and Goals: To maximize independence and improve quality of life of older adults by reducing falls and fall-related injuries through:

 1.   Increasing access to evidence-based falls prevention programs and services

2.   Community education

3.   Public policy and advocacy

4.   Communication

5.   Regional Training Office: Falls prevention program leader training

6.   Facilitating the integration of falls prevention services across the Northern Virginia region
