Sangha Unity Network, Inc. (SUN), with funding from The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, is hosting "The Power of People" workshop led by Michelle Schwartz, M.Ed. CCC-Sp, and Katie Chandler, LCSW.

The workshop was originally developed for participation in person and has been redesigned to follow safe distancing guidance using Zoom. The curriculum has been updated to meet the needs of a virtual learning platform.  We commit to interacting with participants as we learn more about supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities during and following the COVID pandemic restrictions.

This full-day interactive workshop is designed to provide participants with the concepts associated with the Five Valued Accomplishments and Wheelpower, tools that greatly enhance our awareness and presence within our communities and relationships. We encourage direct support professionals, supervisors, support coordinators, any DBHDD contracted providers and Field Office employees to register.

Throughout the workshop, we will offer strategies and examples of how to develop each of the Five Accomplishments (community presence, community participation, valued social roles, contribution and choice) within the life areas identified in the Wheelpower. Self-Advocates involved with Uniting for Change started working with Wheelpower over the last few years and together with their providers, allies and supporters can envision ways to grow and develop plans to get more involved. We want to equip providers and direct support professionals with ideas and tools for supporting folks based on their gifts, capacities and what the person wants; especially during this time of physical distancing!

The Power of People will use a variety of teaching methods including group participation, videos and graphics and yes, we will accomplish this via ZOOM! Participants will leave with a plan to assist someone they know who receives waiver services to create more community connections and acquire or deepen a valued social role. We believe in the power of people and in doing our part to support folks to fully experience being connected, belonging, and having real relationships.
