We are pleased to announce the 2021 Winter Workshops will be held online, Monday, January 11, and Tuesday, January 12. This event will be held exclusively online. Sign up for one or both days, and attend as many sessions as you wish.

Presented by the CCC Information Security Center and Accessibility Center, this twice-annual event is packed with information and techniques you can apply to your professional role. Workshop information is geared toward:

  • IT administrators, managers and specialists
  • IT procurement
  • Disability services directors and staff
  • Faculty training and support
  • IT accessibility specialists

9:00-9:15 am - Introduction
 

9:15-10:10 am - Ransomware Defense
Ransomware is one of the fastest-growing threats to information security within the education sector. In this session, Aamir Khan, Chief Information Security Officer at the California Community Colleges Technology Center, will provide an in-depth look at the problem of ransomware as it applies to higher education institutions, and the recommended practices for California community colleges to defend against this type of cyber-attack.  

10:15-11:10am - Social Engineering
A social engineering attack is when an bad actor attempts to take advantage of an unsuspecting user in order to obtain confidential information or the means to access that information. Omer Usmani, Senior Security Analyst with the CCC Technology Center, will cover the most common social engineering methods - workflow, direct phone solicitation, physical access, and phishing - and what to do if you suspect you have been targeted.

11:15-12:00 pm - Security Event Logging & Monitoring
Logging and monitoring activity on the network - such as emails, logins and firewall updates - makes it easier to detect and analyze anomalous behavior. In this session, Farrukh Ali, Threat Analyst with the CCC Technology Center, will cover configuring systems and applications for security monitoring; deploying Sysmon for Windows monitoring; aggregating and searching security events; alerting on security events; and an introduction to threat hunting.

12:30-1:30 pm - Group Policy for Enhanced Windows Security
 Using Windows Group Policy, network administrators can centrally manage and configure operating systems, applications, and user settings. This presentation by Larry Suto, Security Architect with the CCC Technology Center, will cover configuring Group Policy; testing Group Policy effectiveness; and attacks against weak Group Policy configurations.

1:35-2:25 pm - Microsoft Threat Protection
In this session, Dan Rojas will provide an overview of enterprise security services within the Microsoft Threat Protection suite, including Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection (ATP), Microsoft Defender ATP, Azure ATP, and Microsoft Cloud App Security. 

2:25-2:40 pm - Wrap Up

Join us for an informal, virtual meet and greet (BYO breakfast).

9:00-9:30 am - CCC Accessibility Center: Who We Are and What We Offer
Interim Director, Dawn Okinaka, will introduce the CCC Accessibility Center and the tools and services we provide for no charge to California community colleges.

9:40-10:20 am - Accessibility Laws and Higher Ed: Sections 504 & 508
In this session, we will discuss the federal accessibility laws that define colleges' obligation to provide equal opportunity and access for individuals with disabilities.

10:30-11:20 am -Adopting and Communicating District/Campus Accessibility Policies
Laurie Vasquez, an Assistive Technologies Specialist and known accessibility expert, will present and answer questions regarding tools that colleges can use for adopting the Accessibility Board Policy and Administrative Procedures. This informative session will explain how these support the Accessibility Standard communicated by California Community Colleges Chancellor Oakley.

11:30 am-Noon - Self-paced Accessibility Training Modules
Learn about NEW accessibility training modules created by the Accessibility Standards Working Group and available to college practitioners through the Vision Resource Center. Lene' Whitley-Putz, Dean of Instructional Technology at Foothill College, will provide an overview of these self-paced training modules and how you can access them.

1:00-1:50 pm - PopeTech Web Scanning & Content Editor
Learn how a California community college is using PopeTech tools available through the CCC Accessibility Center to detect and address accessibility issues on their public-facing websites.

2:00-2:50 pm - Building a Culture of Accessibility on Your Campus
This session will feature three California community colleges who will present their experiences in creating a mind-set of online accessibility within the campus culture.

3:00-3:50 pm - Accessible Math/STEM Content
A student's ability to access math content is directly related to how the problem was created and the method in which the content is accessed by the student. Often, faculty scan and save math printouts, which creates inaccessible documents for many students with disabilities. In this session presented by Shawn Jordison, Alternate Media and Assistive Technology Specialist with the CCC Technology Center, we will discuss best practices for creating accessible math content for MS Word while focusing on accessible output options for HTML and ePub files.
