Solving the Collaboration Equation for an Interdisciplinary Health Care Facility

 

Jeff Loyall, Joanne Brown, AIA, John Berkebibe, LEED AP, and Utako Tanebe, AIA, will share how a collaborative partnership between four colleges, two institutions, tow architects, and two construction managers delivered a premier facility for CWRU and the Cleveland Clinic, which is home to an interdisciplinary healthcare education experience that responds to a changing global environment. Learn how to deliver a singular vision with large-scale complex, joint-venture project by using immersive collaboration practices and continous improvement processes.

 

Learning Objectives:

Jeff Loyall:

 Jeff Loyall is a Vice President for Turner Construction Company where he has responsibility for managing healthcare projects in the Cleveland Business Unit.

Under Jeff's direction, Turner has successfully completed numerous healthcare projects for clients such as the Cleveland Clinic, Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center, University Hospitals, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, University of Illinois Medical Center of Chicago, Methodist Medical Center of Illinois, Indiana University Health, Provena Health, Swedish American Hospital, Edward Hospital, Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, University of Chicago Medical Center, John H. Stroger Hospital, Rush North Shore Medical Center and Advocate Healthcare.

Throughout his successful 35 year career, Jeff has had primary responsibilities for profit and loss, business development, preconstruction, estimating, operations, scheduling, cost control, quality assurance and building information modeling. Jeff's career has been built around comprehensive construction services and an extensive background in all phases of Construction Management.

In addition to his technical background and experience, Jeff’s leadership skills combined with his unique ability to develop strong team relationships have proven extremely successful.  His proven level of commitment to his clients is shown with his “hands on” involvement and ability to provide solutions during all project phases while leveraging the resources and experience that he brings to ensure a successful project experience.

Jeff earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Ohio State University.  He has served as an Adjunct Professor of Construction Management at the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University, served on the Board of Directors for the American Institute of Architects and is a member of the American Society of Healthcare Engineers.

Joanne Brown AIA:

Joanne S. Brown, AIA, ASID, MPOD currently serves as Assistant Director of Planning, Design and Construction within the division of Campus Planning and Facilities Management at Case Western Reserve University. Ms. Brown has been employed with the university since June 2008.

 Ms. Brown has 35 years of experience in project management leadership with a strong background in architecture, interior design, and facilities and construction management. Previous experience includes having been a partner within an architectural firm, vice president of a construction company and facility planning director of a bank. Having worked in a variety of fields, with various degrees of resources and capital allocation, Ms. Brown offers diverse knowledge and expertise in successfully managing areas of design, planning and project oversight.

Ms. Brown is also active in numerous civic and professional organizations. Including ASID (American Society of Interior Design), Cleveland City Planning Commission - Euclid Corridor Design Review and Liverpool Township Zoning Board.

Ms. Brown is a State of Ohio Registered Architect and NCIDQ Certified Interior Designer.

Ms. Brown, in May 2020, received a Masters in Positive Organizational Development and Change (MPOD) from the Weatherhead School of Business, Case Western Reserve University.


John Berkebile LEED AP:

John Berkebile is a Senior Project Manager for Donley’s-Independence, a Construction Management firm headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio.

John has 28 years of construction experience, starting as a carpenter, and including roles in estimating and field operations, giving him a well-rounded knowledge of the building process from start to finish. His expertise includes successfully implementing and managing Lean practices, directing the quality management process on projects with stringent quality standards, and leading multi-faceted teams on high-profile projects.

In his more than 18 years with Donley’s-Independence, John has worked on numerous notable projects in Cleveland, including the Samson Pavilion at the Health Education Campus for the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University’s Center for Innovation in Medical Professions, Cleveland Clinic’s Tomsich Pathology Laboratories, and the expansion and renovation of the Cleveland Institute of Music featuring Mixon Hall.

 John earned his Bachelor of Science in Construction Technology degree from Bowling Green State University, and he is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Utako Tanebe AIA:

Born in Tokyo, Utako has spent time in several cities and countries throughout her life. She is a graduate of the University of Toronto in Canada where she received a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering (2006), Bachelor of Arts Honours in Architectural Studies (2009) and a Master of Architecture (2013). Throughout graduate school she held a variety of internships from Tokyo to Boston. Through an internship with a professor at the University of Toronto, Utako was part of a team that won a Progressive Architecture Citation Award for their work on an ecotourism proposal for the Ministry of Tourism in Jordan. Most recently, Utako served as the Project Architect at DLR Group | Westlake Reed Leskosky for the Samson Pavilion which was designed by the London based firm Foster + Partners.
