Coffee with the Fellows, Volume 1 Session 5

Coffee with the Fellows is an ongoing series centered around a conversation between

one Fellow and one emerging professional, interviewing each other. The podcast-like format

allows for the inviting conversation to be live, recorded, and archived as a library of

multigenerational design professionals. In this session, Don Horn, FAIA and Angela Miklich

each reflect on their careers as architects for the U.S. General Services Administration.

Their discussion will center on untraditional career paths, the value of design thinking

in leadership positions in government, and advice to emerging professionals

Learning Objectives:

Attendees will explore untraditional career paths for architects. Attendees will discover the value architects can add to governmental agencies and public institutions and the benefits architects find working in the public sphere.

Attendees will consider how design thinking and strategy propel architects in leadership positions, both in private practice and in public institutions.

Attendees will understand the importance of mentorship to designers and architects in all stages of their careers. Attendees will consider advice given to emerging professionals and young architects.

Attendees will observe examples of how architects can bring their individual strengths and interests (such as sustainability) to their role.

Don Horn, FAIA

Don Horn, FAIA, is a leader in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of buildings through policy and advocacy within the Federal government. As Deputy Director of GSA’s Office of Federal High-Performance Buildings, Don promotes environmentally responsible decision-making for buildings, and translates green building strategies and ideals into practical solutions to meet federal goals for new construction, repair and alteration, facility management, and leasing.

His professional service includes leadership roles with ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1, Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings, and present or former advisory roles in three of the primary high-performance building certification organizations in the U.S. – the U.S. Green Building Council, the Green Building Initiative, and the International Living Future Institute.

Don has over 29 years of experience with GSA in both sustainable design and historic preservation. Prior to GSA, he worked for private sector architecture firms in Virginia. He holds a Master of Architecture degree from Georgia Tech and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia. He was elevated to Fellow in 2015.
