Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and Audiologists (AuDs) need to be prepared for the new requirements for continuing education in supervision established by the Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). This training program focuses on strategies and the necessary and unique skill sets essential to the role and success of clinical supervisors. The presentation includes resources to assist new and experienced clinicians to better support graduate students, clinical fellows and assistants by providing supervisors with the tools needed to be successful in their role as mentor.

Speakers

Robert Serianni, MS, CCC-SLP, FNAP is Chair/Program Director and Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Salus University, with the primary role of oversight the didactic and clinical aspects of the Department. Bob also teaches as well as supervises students in the clinic. He has vast experience in acute care, rehabilitation, and home health for adult and geriatric populations.

Patricia Mayro, MA, CCC-SLP is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Salus University. In addition to supervising graduate students in SLI, Trish teaches in pediatric coursework. She has extensive experience in the assessment and intervention of children, with a specialization in childhood apraxia of speech.

Both speakers and all relevant personnel have completed a disclosure form. Patricia Mayro and Robert Serianni are both employed at Salus University. There are no non financial relationships to disclose.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

• Identify ASHA requirements and regulations for student clinician training.

• Develop mentorship skills for working with adult learners.

• Determine standards of performance in evaluating clinical supervisory skills.

• Share experiences and solutions for best practices in clinical supervision.

• Identify their own leadership styles and interpersonal skills and how that may impact supervisory relationships.
