An Unthinkable Disaster, A Radical Transformation

Program Description

The 2018 Camp Fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California’s history – the fire devastated the town of Paradise and much of Butte County. Focusing on a culture centered in innovation, creativity, and love, North Valley Community Foundation brought together for-profits and non-profits to support and transform the community. Alexa Benson-Valavanis, President and CEO, will share the story of the Community Foundation’s disaster response, the monumental role of philanthropy in relief and recovery work, and the power of collaboration in crisis response.

President and CEO, North Valley Community Foundation
 

Alexa has served as president and CEO of North Valley Community Foundation (NVCF) since July 2005. She was recruited to play basketball at Chico State University and graduated with a degree in journalism, then worked in business development in Shanghai, China, before starting an organization supporting nonprofit development in Guatemala. Alexa was hired to rebuild NVCF in 2005, and engineered a new business model mobilizing social entrepreneurs and philanthropists locally and around the globe. Under Alexa's leadership the foundation has grown by 4,856%, including tremendous growth in clients, services and revenues of more than $175 million and granted more than $100 million to causes in Northern California, the United States and throughout the world.

Alexa deeply believes in the inherent good of humanity and the unstoppable force of love. She is most proud of her role on this planet as a mother and wife. She has published two books and is working on her third now.
