This brief introductory course will examine the clinical implications of incorporating the arts in therapy, with particular attention to the dynamics that occur when a therapist materially participates in assigning or directing tasks. Discussion will include an overview of art therapy practice including New York State licensing, national certification and scope of practice guidelines. Course will review the advantages of art and nonverbal interventions including an understanding of basic media along the expressive continuum of control vs. regression. Students will be introduced to responsible techniques for how to engage clients in art making that forwards the goals of treatment and in how to understand art work’s meaning, such as how to identify and expand narratives and metaphors and co-construct meaning. Workshop will include didactic methods, group discussion, and hands-on practice of activities.  Participants will be asked to bring any art materials and paper that they can find in their own homes to use for practice. We can work with whatever they have on hand.

Who Should Attend:

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe the possibilities and limitations for the use of the arts in therapy for mental health professionals who are not licensed as creative arts therapists

  • Participants will be able to identify the three most common kinds of resistance seen in clients asked to engage in creative arts therapies
  • Participants will be able to describe responsible techniques for discussing client artwork and co-constructing meaning that will forward the work of therapy to meet treatment goals
