2/24/21 - The Endocannabinoid System and Cannabis Usage in Disease and Disorder

Dr. Cardwell C. Nuckols

Important Notes & Announcements:

Course Description:

There are numerous claims of safety and efficacy using cannabinoids to treat many conditions, diseases and disorders. Unfortunately, these assertions often have little empirical evidence to support them. During this webinar, we will review the various cannabinoids, what they are being evaluated to treat, and what is the strength of the evidence supporting the claim.

This skills training will overview the neurobiology of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and how cannabis as a medicinal agent (especially THC and CBD) interfaces with the ECS and other systems. As an example, what do we really know about the use of cannabinoids (THC and CBD) in the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder? The story of Rimonabant will illustrate the complexity of interfacing with multiple internal systems. The ECS is involved in pain, memory, anxiety and depression and food consumption. These are areas of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry. An overview of research in these areas will be offered.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the functions of the endocannabinoid system.
2. Discuss the use of cannabinoids as medicincal agents utilized to treat various disorders including PTSD.
3. Discuss the scientific evidence supporting cannabis use in treating "wasting syndromes", AIDs, social anxiety disorder, etc.
