This two-part presentation focuses on the responsible integration of digital tools in play therapy,the importance of speaking the client's language, honoring the client's culture, and theincorporation of the therapist 4Cs: Competence, Comfort, Culture, and Capability during theCOVID pandemic and beyond.
The first portion will focus on the fundamentals and explore the questions "how is it acceptableand therapeutic to use digital tools in play therapy?" and "how do I incorporate these tools intopractice?". The second portion will focus on the practical and experiential components such as"how do I know what apps/games/programs to use?" and "how do I even play any of these?" and"how on earth do I speak about this with others (parents, collateral contacts, etc.)?"
The inclusion of these digital tools is to be seen as an "and": we can use our traditional itemsAND include digital tools in person and through telehealth. Whether the participant is a"technoskeptic" or a "technoneccisist", this course will guide the participant through thefundamental tenets of the modality of Digital Play Therapy (DPT). Grounded in Prescriptive Play Therapy and the Therapeutic Powers of Play, a structure for the appropriate use andintegration of digital tools will be discussed. Inclusion and accessibility are critical aspects of DPT and the well-rounded therapist will benefit from understanding this important topic in moredepth. There is therapeutic value in the discussion of your client’s interests, in the knowledge ofsuch interests, entering their world and culture, and the inclusion of digital tools in play therapy.Console, web-based, and app based interventions will be discussed and included in theexperiential exercises – including UnoFreak, Animal Crossing®, Roblox®, Virtual Sandtray©®,and more!
Digital play therapy is not about jumping on some trendy bandwagon; it is about appropriatelyincorporating cultural shifts and having a foundation for such inclusion. There is room for manydifferent grounded modalities and approaches under the play therapy umbrella and thispresentation invites everyone in to find out more for telehealth and beyond!

Presenter:Jessica Stone, Ph.D., RPT-S, is a licensed psychologist working in a private practice setting inColorado. She is an international speaker, sought after clinical supervisor, and renowned playtherapist. She is the co-creator of The Virtual Sandtray, a best-selling author, and developer ofDigital Play Therapy. Dr. Stone has been featured for her work throughout the virtual world asan innovator, ambassador of play, and stalwart advocate for the use of digital technology in thefield of psychology. Dr. Stone has numerous publications to date including IntegratingTechnology into Modern Therapies, Game Play, Play Therapy Theory and Perspectives, andDigital Play Therapy in addition to numerous chapters in a variety of books. She has served asthe president of the California Association for Play Therapy branch, the Leadership AcademyChair, on the Association for Play Therapy Nominations committee, is a member of the AutPlayAdvisory Board, and serves as an affiliate of the East Carolina University College of EducationNeurocognition Science Laboratory.
