Getting Together with Gary Karr & Rufus Reid

Welcome to Getting Together with Gary! On the first Saturday of each month, Gary Karr hosts an online salon, inviting fascinating guests to share stories, ideas and points of view about the musical life. For his premiere episode, Gary gets together with...

Legendary bassist, composer, Grammy-nominated recording artist and educator Rufus Reid. Rufus earned his bachelor's degree in double bass performance at Northwestern University, studying with Warren Benfield and Chicago Symphony principal bass Joe Guastefeste. He has toured and recorded as a leader and sideman to countless jazz greats and continues to lead the Out Front Trio. His focus moved to composition after five years with the BMI Jazz Composer's Workshop, resulting in acclaimed works for string orchestra, jazz ensembles, concert band and double bass. With Dr. Martin Krivin, he founded the Jazz Studies & Performance Program at William Paterson University. Rufus retired after 20 years but continues to teach, conducting master classes, workshops, and residencies around the world. His bass method, The Evolving Bassist, published in 1974, has become an industry standard.
