This course is for newly appointed detectives with less than 2 years* experience in a detective’s role.

*This time frame is only recommended, not a fixed number, but this training is geared for newer detectives.

The day has come, you been assigned to the detective bureau.  Are you ready?  It’s no longer writing tickets and responding to “loud music” calls. This 5-day course will deeply cover tried and true investigative principles that can be applied to any type of criminal investigation ranging from larcenies to homicides. The only thing that is different is how they are applied based upon what you have in front of you. Moving from solid ground to solid ground during the course of any investigation is the basic foundational principle to ensuring your case is as solid as it can be from inception to court trial. Conducting the pre-liminary investigation 

Techniques and methods to determine if a crime has been committed

Probable Cause

The importance of identification of crimes

Knowing the elements of the crime(s) that has been committed

Methods used to conduct a thorough investigation

How to assess and handle a crime scene

Evidence handling

Cellphone preservation techniques when  coming contact with a suspect who has a cellphone/electronic device on his person

Basic Search warrant and affidavit writing        

Consent to search      

5th and 6th Amendments

Identifying suspects

Witness identification and techniques used              in  gaining cooperation

Basic interview and interrogation techniques used in talking to witnesses, victims and suspects

Handling witnesses, victims and suspects

Techniques used in handling of evidence (Forensics)

Court preparation

Courtroom testimony

Dealing with prosecutors

Dealing with defense attorneys and common tactics used during trial

Utilizing various Data Base Tools: NCIC, DMV, Lexus/Accurint, TLO

Instructor:  Sgt. Brian Williams, is currently assigned to the Norfolk Police Department’s Special Crimes Unit. During his career with the Norfolk Police Department, Sergeant Williams has worked in all three patrol divisions of the Field Operations Bureau as well as various assignments within the Investigative Services Bureau to include General Assignment and Burglary squads as well as the Special Crimes Unit.  He has received awards for Police Officer of the Quarter, American Legion – Police Officer of the Year and the Police Commendation award. Sergeant Williams has worked cases of all types; everything from minor thefts to a capital murder case and almost everything in between. He has spent most of his investigative time investigating Burglaries and Sexual Assault cases. He is currently spearheading an initiative to solve cold case rapes within his organization. Sergeant Williams is a native of Norfolk, Virginia, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Logistics. Prior to joining the Norfolk Police Department he served 4 years as a Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defense Specialist with the U.S. Marine Corps. He joined the growing list of professional instructors for SRR Training in 2020.

Instructor: Det. Jonathan Smith, is currently assigned to the Norfolk Police Department’s Cold Case Homicide Unit and serves as the only sworn member of the unit. Jon has spent most of his career working in the Violent Crime Unit where he has worked hundreds of death investigations, including homicides, suspicious, accidental, and natural deaths. He has also worked several capital murder cases. Jon has experience handling many high-profile cases, including a homicide case that led him to Ft. Lauderdale, FL to apprehend two murder suspects after the case was featured on the television show, America’s Most Wanted. He is a native of North Carolina, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy. He joined the growing list of professional instructors for SRR Training in 2019.
