Little Soddy Creek
Gorge Section of the Cumberland Trail

Tennessee Valley Wild Ones members are invited to participate in an early spring hike along the Little Soddy Creek Gorge Section of the Cumberland Trail.  Stephan Eselgroth will lead the hike.

We will be hiking a rocky, damp and mossy, connector trail, through Hemlock, Mountain Laurel and Rhododendron, then onto a loop with a historic mining interpretive trail, then less than 1 mile out and back for a view of Fan Club Moss (aka Running Cedar) and Shining Club Moss. The earliest flowers of the season such as Hepatica, Violets, Toothwort, Harbinger of Spring, and Spring Beauty, maybe even an overachiever Trillium., should be visible.  Many, many others will be poking through but not yet blooming.

Rating of the trail is moderate, due to elevation gain upon return to the trailhead and probable wet rocky spots here and there, but mostly easy otherwise.  Feet may get wet, maybe muddy, so dress for cold weather if temperatures are low, but layer to avoid overheating upon return.  There will be small creek crossings usually atop rocks.

Hike details:

Meeting up will be at 09:45 EST.  Directions to the meeting location will be emailed to registrants in the week preceding the hike.

The group will leave and return from the "northern end," which can be accessed from the Little Soddy Trailhead.  Duration approximately 2.5 hrs.  (We will not be through-hiking to the "southern end" of the trail at Mowbray Pike-which would be another 4.2 miles one way).

Masks will be required.  Distancing precautions will also be required.
Bring snack/water, hiking poles or find a big stick, change of shoes for afterward, if desired.
Lunch will be on your own after hiking.

Limit: 10 participants.

This program is free and open to Tennessee Valley Chapter Wild Ones members, including family.
