Excel in Libraries with Library Juice Academy - Online Series (05/03/21-05/30/21)

IMPORTANT: This is a single class meant to be completed at your own pace over the course of the month of May.

Unlike Excel classes we have offered in the past, this is a self-paced course with weekly assignments and projects to be completed during the month of May.  

At some point in your library career you will interact with a spreadsheet, be it one that contains data you have entered, someone else has entered, or data you have exported from a system. With Excel, you can easily manage and wrangle structured data, even if it is not in an Excel format. This class will teach the basics of working in Excel, including entering, structuring, manipulating, importing and exporting data. It will also cover some Excel functions and tools for basic data analysis. The class assignments will incorporate practical data tasks that you would encounter in a library or information management setting.

By the end of the class, students will:

• Learn good practices for data entry, spreadsheet structure, and data organization
• Understand data formats and how to troubleshoot common formatting errors (such as dates)
• Be able to sort and filter data and write basic Excel functions
• Learn how to perform cleanup, quality control, and data validation using Excel’s data tools
• Learn to import and export data to CSV and tab separated files

This four-week class involves about 15 total hours of work (3.75 hours per week). This is intended for those with basic or intermediate Excel skills, but more advanced students may pick up library-related tips and tricks not encountered elsewhere. 

Virtual Trainer: Greer Martin

Greer Martin is the Metadata Technologies Librarian at Loyola University Chicago, where she coordinates metadata interoperability across library platforms. She has written and presented on using OpenRefine for metadata cleanup and authority reconciliation, and has managed metadata migration projects. Greer previously held metadata librarian positions at the Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Georgia where she created and enhanced metadata for aggregation by Digital Public Library of America. She received an MLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
