Chinese Cooking Demonstration with Award-Winning Author Grace Young 

Join the CCNY Asian Alumni Group, James Beard Award-winning author, Grace Young, for a unique virtual session about Chinese New Year traditions, learning about the quintessential Chinese “wok,” stir-fry techniques, and how to cook your own “lucky New Year” dish. Also learn about Grace’s campaign to support the restaurants and other Chinatown businesses impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Renowned cookbook author, Grace Young will speak about Chinese New Year traditions, especially as they relate to food. Grace will also do a cooking demonstration of Longevity Noodles with Spicy Pork and Vegetables and explain why this is a lucky dish to eat for the New Year! She will cover the essentials for stir-fry success and how to choose a wok and accessories.

Grace will also overview what’s happening in Manhattan’s Chinatown and the work that she’s been doing to support the community ---from her James Beard Foundation partnership to #SaveChineseRestaurants Instagram campaign to her fundraiser with “Welcome to Chinatown” to raise money to feed the vulnerable in the community and support legacy restaurants.

Named the “poet laureate of the wok” by food historian Betty Fussell, Grace Young has devoted her career to demystifying the ancient cooking utensil for use in contemporary kitchens. An award-winning cookbook author, culinary historian, and filmmaker, Grace has been a fierce advocate for Chinatown, never more so than in her recent video series Coronavirus: Chinatown Stories, —produced in collaboration with videographer Dan Ahn and Poster House—which documents the toll of the pandemic on NYC’s Chinese community. She is also partnering with the James Beard Foundation on an Instagram campaign to #savechineserestaurants all across the country. Grace is the recipient of  James Beard Awards for her Wok Therapist comedy video and her cookbook Stir-Frying to the Sky’s Edge. She has won five IACP awards including the prestigious 2019 Culinary Classics Award for The Breath of a Wok, (the “youngest” book to be inducted into the Cookbook Hall of Fame). Grace has lectured at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, New York University, San Francisco Asian Art Museum, Culinary Institute of America Greystone, James Beard Foundation, Museum of Food and Drink, Museum of Chinese in America, China Institute, and the American Museum of Natural History.
