Sexual abuse is a complex public health issue that impacts everyone – individuals, communities, institutions, and society as a whole. The prevention of sexual abuse requires a multi-disciplinary and collaborative response that incorporates victim-centered, evidence-based strategies for all impacted persons. However, prevention efforts are often impaired by the numerous misconceptions and ongoing myths regarding sexual abuse and those who commit sexual offenses.
This session will provide an overview on the dynamics of sexual abuse, such as what is sexual abuse, who commits sexual abuse and who are the victims of sexual abuse; facts about adults and youth who commit sexual abuse to include recidivism rates, best practices for treatment/management and effective public policy; and recommendations for maximizing prevention efforts through multi-disciplinary collaboration among professionals, individuals and communities.
Participants will gain information on the dynamics of sexual abuse from a public health lens and hear strategies for multi-disciplinary collaboration to meet the shared goal of prevention. The presentation will also explain the differences between youth adjudicated for a sexual crime and adults convicted of a sexual crime. This training consists of a 90-min presentation and 30-min Q&A to allow interaction between the presenter and participants in real time.
Presenter: Katherine “Katie” Gotch, LPC, CCSOT, ATSA-F
Audience Level: Beginning: Appropriate for all attendees as an introduction to a topic
Areas of Emphasis: Sexual abuse, sexual offending, sexual violence, prevention, treatment, management, policy
