Employment for All: Cultural Competency in Supported Employment

Sandra Urite & Patty Gonzalez from the Arc of King County

Please join us on Wednesday, March 10 for our webinar, "Employment for All: Cultural Competency in Supported Employment", with Sandra Urite & Patty Gonzalez from the Arc of King County.

Employment can be challenging for people with developmental disabilities and finding the right support person is critical. For multicultural families, the right professional is even more important. In this presentation we will explore how to support an individual in a culturally competent and individualized way that encourages success in the workplace.

Join Patty Gonzalez, Parent to Parent Coordinator for Spanish speaking families and Sandra Urite, Information and Resource Specialist for Spanish speaking families, both from the Arc of King County, as they share their insights and perspectives on this essential topic.

Learning Objectives (Info, tools, and skills attendees will receive):

  • How to support an individual in a culturally competent and individualized way that encourages success in the workplace.
  • How to avoid assumptions.
  • Strategies to build the trust.
  • How to identify and align the goals.
  • Aspects to consider when creating an action plan.

Do you require an accommodation, materials in alternate format or have inquiries about accessibility in this event? If so, please reach out to support@gowise.org no later than 5pm Friday prior to this webinar. Due to the short turnaround of our webinar series we are unable to accommodate same day requests. Patty Gonzalez
Patty Gonzalez is the Parent to Parent Coordinator for Spanish-speaking families at the Arc of King County, where she has advocated for the rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for over ten years. She has led trainings for parents and community members on special education services, advocacy, navigating government services, and guardianship laws. Patricia has two daughters and a son. Her son was diagnosed with ADD/ADHD at a young age, which inspired her to learn how to advocate for him at school and help him succeed. Her other projects include partnering with the Odessa Brown Children’s clinic to become a Mindfulness Facilitator, and has led mindfulness sessions in Spanish and English.
In her free time, she likes to traveling, learning about other cultures, and hanging out with her friends and family (socially distanced, of course).

Supported employment is rooted in the firm belief that all people deserve respect, dignity, and self-determination.  Here at Wise, we are committed to standing up for and embracing positive changes in policies and practices to stamp out oppression and discrimination in our institutions and systems. We are focused on our mission of inclusion and equitable employment for people with disabilities. With this in mind, we ask that all participants extend respect, humility and grace during our events. We strive to create a learning platform where we all leave with new ways of thinking, doing and moving supported employment forward.
