Designing Contractors

Project Team’s Guide to Delegated Design & Design-Assist Subcontracts

Design responsibility rests in the hands of the design professional of record – that is, until it doesn't. Join us for our April chapter meeting where Vivian Volz, Principal Specifier of VVAS, will present on The Project Team's Guide to Delegate Design and Design-Assist Subcontracts. This presentation explores two processes for shared design responsibility: design-assist by a contractor or subcontractor, and delegated design of a system or assembly. We'll dispel some misconceptions and mistaken identities, discover some pitfalls, and unlock each process with keys to success. Emerging professionals will learn what to look for and what to expect from each process. Experienced team players will be itching to check contracts and specs for important safeguards and dangerous mix-ups. Ensuring design continuity is a team effort, and never more than when design responsibility is shared.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the code-required and contractual design responsibilities of the designer of record
  • Explain how design-assist, delegated design, and design-build contract documents alter these responsibilities
  • Respond to the expectations and frequent misunderstandings surrounding each process
  • Identify and require the keys to contractor participation in design: performance requirements, design constraints, design substantiation, review by authorities, and performance substantiation
  • Recommend an effective design delivery process for a project or system
