Racial Justice in the Academy: For decades, African American, Native American, and Latinx people have been underrepresented in academia. In this workshop Profs. Carliss Chatman (W&L) and Najarian Peters (Kansas) will discuss their forthcoming essay in the UCLA Law Review Discourse, The Soft Shoe Shuffle of Law School Hiring Committee Practices in which they explore the numerous excuses that are used to downgrade and/or eliminate candidates of color in the hiring process. Although the paper addresses law school hiring in particular, the insights in the paper are broadly applicable across academic programs. Participants are invited to think about the strategies by which academic hiring committees justify their hiring preferences.

This event is convened by Prof. Cyra Akila Choudhury for the Racial Justice in Academia Series of CLASIC
