Webinar Description

Creating meaningful employment opportunities for people with disabilities is a critical role for rehabilitation professionals.  To facilitate successful employment outcomes, rehabilitation professional must understand a job seeker’s strengths, interest, and needs as they relate to employment.  It is equally important to consider the cultural diversity of the job seeker during this process.  This presentation will explore the multicultural competencies needed to support people with disabilities from diverse backgrounds. The presentation will include discussion and information about current demographics of diverse populations, Cultural interaction challenges such as implicit biases and microaggressions, and approaches to cultural responsiveness including self-assessment, humility, and the Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) standards. This presentation will help to reflect and improve on culturally relevant competencies for professionals working with multicultural diverse populations.


Presenters:

 Eduardo Ortiz Ph.D.
Dr. Ortiz is a Senior Research Associate at the Research and Training Division of the Center for Persons with Disabilities (CPD) at the College of Education of Utah State University (USU). Eduardo is also core Faculty and Diversity & Cultural Learning coordinator of the Utah Regional Leadership Educational in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities URLEND program. He has been working more than 15 years on research, evaluation, and training projects and programs at the CPD – USU. His extensive experience in the disabilities, diversity, and leadership fields will support effective approaches related to the intersection between multicultural diversity and employment. 
Tim Riesen, Ph.D
Dr. Riesen is the Division Director of Research and Training at the Center for Persons with Disabilities with an appointment as a research associate professor in the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation. Dr. Riesen’s research focuses on promoting positive employment outcomes for individuals with more significant disabilities, secondary transition, policy, and evidence-based instruction.
