Overview

This training covers a variety of high impact topics related to behavioral health and is designed to support healthcare teams in providing whole-person care for patients across the lifespan. Rather than siloing behavioral health to a singular role in a practice, this training empowers a variety of primary care and specialty clinicians and staff members, including licensed behavioral health providers, to form effective collaborative care teams and provide high-quality care. Alex Hulst, PhD, LMFT

Alex holds a PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy with a Certificate of Advanced Specialization in Medical Family Therapy. Since 2012, she has provided therapy for individuals, couples, and families in various primary and specialty care settings, including pediatrics and inpatient care. Dr. Hulst’s background includes training resident physicians and mental health clinicians in integrated behavioral health practices, leading multi-disciplinary consultation groups in care management, and assisting with grant management supporting integrated behavioral health in rural and smaller practices in western Colorado. She co-chaired the 2019 annual conference for the Collaborative Family Healthcare Association and has published a book titled Contextual Therapy for Family Health: Clinical Applications.

Deepu George, PhD, LMFT

 Deepu George is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of medicine. In addition to training medical and mental health learners in the Primary Care Behavioral Health Model, he also serves as the Director of Integrated Behavioral Health at the School of Medicine. He is interested in increasing the primary care ready behavioral health workforce to facilitate seamless integration that focuses on health.

Leah Hemeyer, LPC

 Leah Hemeyer, LPC, holds a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Denver and found herself in the world of integrated behavioral health from the start of her career. Initially, her integrated work was in collaboration with Mind Springs Health and based in a community health center. Since 2012, Leah has been embedded in a primary care office, Yampa Valley Medical Associates, in Steamboat Springs. Leah is available to address to anything related to behavioral health: depression, anxiety, stress, weight management/health goals, substance use, sleep issues, especially insomnia. Sleep challenges became a frequent reason for referral, and feeling she wanted more tools than the traditional sleep hygiene guidelines, Leah pursued training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). CBT-I has been a nice compliment to her integrated work and a popular treatment for patients that can be offered in-house. Leah enjoys meeting briefly with a patient during a doctor’s visit to address behavioral health or sleep issues, she can do short-term follow-up counseling appointments separate from the doctor’s visit, and will facilitate referrals to on-going support or community resources, as needed.

Cathy Schneider, LCSW

After moving to the Eagle River Valley over a year ago to work as the Director of Behavioral Health at Colorado Mountain Medical, Cathy has have found a passion for leading a team of awesome clinicians as they navigate the pandemic while building an integrated program to meet the needs of the community. Using her social work training with a gender studies lens, she gets to support and advocate for both patients and providers every day. Coming from rural Missouri by way of the Front Range, Cathy is continually excited to learn and grow with her fellow providers to create an accessible, supportive, and clinically sound program.

Elise Peterson, MA, LPC, LAC, ADS

Elise is dually licensed in the state of Colorado as a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Addiction Counselor. She is also an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Denver, Daniel’s College of Business before completing her Master of Arts degree in Counseling and Psychological Services from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. She has worked in a variety of settings including Higher Education, Community Mental Health and Addiction Treatment Centers. She serves our community as Governance Chair and an Executive Board Member of All Points Transits, which is a local public transportation agency. Her passion is to help patients win the battle against addiction and help fight the opioid epidemic. She enjoys practicing yoga and Alpine skiing the San Juan and Rocky Mountains.

Lindsey Whittington, MPH

Lindsey Whittington joined the Colorado Health Institute in November 2019 as a Research Analyst. Lindsey’s work includes quantitative research analysis of public health surveillance systems and creating data visualizations. Before coming to CHI, Lindsey worked at the Tri-County Health Department on a year-long internship. She focused on understanding the impact of electronic vapor products and other substance use issues in youth populations across the Denver metro region. She conducted geospatial analyses, assessed chronic disease burden in underserved populations, and developed a passion for data management, visualization, and analysis. Lindsey earned a master’s degree in public health with a concentration in epidemiology from the Colorado School of Public Health at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in May 2019. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Colorado State University in May 2016. Outside of CHI, Lindsey likes to read, write, travel, and find new places to drink coffee and beer with friends.

Emily Johnson, MS

Emily Johnson, MS is the Colorado Health Institute’s Director of Policy Analysis. She joined CHI in May 2015 and leads a variety of projects with an emphasis on quantitative analysis and financial modeling. She studies how both local and federal proposals could impact Colorado, its budget, and the health of our residents. Before coming to CHI, Emily worked as an analyst with national and international health nonprofits. Emily graduated from the University of Colorado in May 2015 with a master’s degree in health services research. Her academic work focused on associations between state regulations and nonprofit hospital community-benefit spending and behavior. She holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and religion from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

 

Anna Messinger, MHA, PCMH CCE

Anna holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Business Administration and a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration. She is also a Certified Content Expert in NCQA’s Patient-Centered Medical Home model. Mrs. Messinger has five years of experience working with primary care practices in quality improvement initiatives and collaborating with key stakeholders in the medical neighborhood.

 

 

Ana Bridges, PhD

Dr. Bridges is a Professor of psychology and Director of Clinical Training at the University of Arkansas. She leads the Diversity Research and Enhanced Access for Minorities (DREAM) lab, specializing in investigating culturally responsive evidence-based mental health care services for underserved communities. She has developed numerous academic-community partnerships to deliver behavioral health care to people in diverse locations such as primary care clinics, shelters, and prisons. Dr. Bridges is a native of Argentina and fluent in Spanish and English.

Renee Richker, MD

Renee Ann Richker, MD attended Texas Tech Health Sciences Center for medical school, where she was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, a Medical Honor Society for excellence in academics. Dr. Richker completed her Adult Psychiatry Residency at UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, finishing her training as Chief Resident. The mountains were calling, so she completed her Child Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of Colorado. She worked at several mental health centers in the Denver Metro Area over the next 18 years, working with underprivileged children with complex psychiatric issues, and also many kids in foster care. She started her private practice in 2004. Primarily a general child psychiatrist specializing in medication management, she noticed that the majority of her families came in with “emotional dysregulation” as a primary concern. Diagnosis and treatment of these kids and families became a passion, culminating in her recent collaboration with Kristin Russell, PhD on the documentary, I Want My Kid Back: Treating Emotional Dysregulation.

Kristin Schudy Russell, PhD

Kristin Schudy Russell, PhD received a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Mississippi in 1996. After completing a post-doctoral internship at a children’s residential treatment program, she worked with children and families in the Kansas foster care system for 3 years. She practiced as a generalist for 6 years in a group private practice before moving to Colorado in 2006. Since then, she has practiced as a women’s psychologist with a specialty in postpartum mood disorders. After raising a son who experienced emotional dysregulation, she recently finished producing a documentary on childhood mental illness: I Want My Kid Back: Treating Emotional Dysregulation. She is pursuing a certificate in public policy at the University of Colorado at Denver and hopes to influence changes through policy in mental health funding in the future.

Douglas Tynan PhD, ABPP

Doug Tynan is the Coordinator for Mental Health Education for the American Diabetes Association.  As a health and child psychologist he has more than 30 years’ experience at AI duPont Hospital for Children and Children National Medical Center in both primary care and diabetes integrated care clinics.  At CNMC he helped to develop one of the first comprehensive psychosocial program for children with diabetes.  In addition, he has served on State of Delaware and federal HHS advisory boards on health care reform, early childhood programs and Head Start.  He was a founding co-editor of Clinical Practice in Pediatric Psychology and the founding Director of Integrated Health Care at the American Psychological Association. His work has focused on the coordination of health, mental health, education and social services for children and adults.  He received the 2021 Wright Ross Salk Award for Distinguished Service from the Society of Pediatric Psychology and the 2019 Distinguished Service to the Profession Award from the American Board of Professional Psychology.
