Emergency Procedures in Sports: Certified Sports Physician Course

Being CPR certified is a requirement for the CCSP exam. CPR certification is being offered for this course at an additional cost of $60. On the registration page be sure to select this fee and you will be sent the online course material 2-3 weeks before the course. A time for your CPR practical will be coordinated with the instructor for the weekend of the Emergency Procedures Course.

Program Description
The student will understand how an emergency medical team functions and the various roles of its team members. The student will learn to recognize emergency situations and take the appropriate actions to manage the emergency in both on-field and off-field events. Cardiovascular, hypoperfusion and fracture care will be given special attention.

Format
The program content will be presented in both lecture and laboratory format. 

Outline

Hour 1. Introduction to emergency management principles - duties of the team physician related to the care of the seriously injured athlete

Hour 2. Communicating in the EMS system, emergency procedures related equipment

Hour 3. Universal precautions and blood-borne pathogens

Hour 4. The initial (Primary) assessment (ABCDs) and Secondary surveys -technique and skills workshop (hands-on)

Hour 5. Airway Management, Assessment, Maintenance for compromised airways, Application of oxygen

Hour 6. Evaluation of the Unconscious Athlete, Altered Mental Status (AMS)-includes AEIOU-TIPS, stroke, diabetic emergencies, seizures

Hour 7. On-the-field management of spinal injuries and application of the cervical collar- technique and skills workshop (hands-on)

Hour 8. On-the-field management of spinal injuries continued – log rolling, spine boarding- technique and skills workshop (hands-on)

Hour 9. On-the-field management of Shock Recognition and Care Interventions-cardiopulmonary considerations, cardiovascular collapse

Hour 10. On-the-field management of other forms of shock, additional visceral and systemic conditions

Hour 11. On-the-field management of extremity fractures, splinting upper and lower extremities, ribs, soft tissue injuries- technique and skills workshop (hands-on)

Hour 12. Management of environmental injuries – heat/cold

 

The safety of our faculty and attendees is of the upmost importance.  Following school guidelines at this time, proper masking is a requirement for this course. You will be expected to wear a mask covering your nose and mouth for the entirety of the program.
