Understanding and Supporting Students with Dyslexia and Other Reading Disabilities – Genevieve Thomas

 In this two-part workshop, participants will learn essentials for supporting students with dyslexia and other reading disabilities.  The workshops will consist of lecture, shared readings, small group reflections and discussions, and opportunities to apply new learning in school-based contexts.

ALERT Learning is a whole-child, whole-community initiative designed to provide school leaders, teachers, support staff, and families with the knowledge, motivation, and tools to:

  • enhance brain-considerate teaching and learning
  • develop an empowering social-emotional learning culture
  • build student leadership capacity
  • enhance positive classroom and behavior management.
Participants gain profound insights about the learning process and how to translate this new knowledge into effective classroom practice. Each participant will end the course with an extensive repertoire of practical teacher “moves” ready for  effective implementation

SEL and Beyond the Pandemic - Melissa Tovaas, Director of Education Services, School Services of Montana 

The pandemic has heightened student and adult social and emotional needs, placing a spotlight and urgency on SEL in schools. Yet embedding SEL into our systems and developing the mindset for SEL is no quick and easy feat. The Montana OPI has task forces on the SEL mission. In this session, you will explore Montana’s new SEL Competencies and how to weave them into your work. Experience structures and strategies supportive of SEL, and engage in collaborative conversations with peers from across Montana, to brainstorm ideas and collect resources to build into your 2021-22 SEL plans.

Increasing daily mindfulness is done to reduce burnout, increase joy and improve the qualitative interactions with students and staff.
