*Shame: The Master Emotion

*Participants MUST attend BOTH dates, 9.20 AND 9.27 to be eligible for 6 CE's,  NO partial CE's.
Unaddressed shame has destructive consequences for individuals, families and communities. Shame can cause or exacerbate depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, criminal activity, aggression and codependent behavior.  Gaining knowledge about the dynamics of shame is an essential, but often neglected part of the curriculum in most graduate education programs for mental health professionals.  This course addresses the interplay between shame, vulnerability, pride and guilt.  Participants will examine the causes and impact of shame as well as cultural implications.  This course offers clinicians tools and resources to address shame in counseling.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define shame and discuss its impact for individuals and families.
  • Describe how shame influences:  parenting, schools, criminal activity, aggression and the treatment of mental health as well as substance use disorders
  • Outline gender and cultural differences in their experience of shame
  • Incorporate basic principles and best-practices in the treatment of shame.

This course is designed to address the learning needs of social workers, counselors, psychologists & other mental health professionals from beginner to advanced levels.

*This course is presented in 2 modules on 9.20.21 AND 9.27.21 from 9:15PM-12:30PM.  Participants MUST be present for the duration on both days in order to be eligible for a certificate of completion.
