Working with the Experts:

Emotional Safety Skills Implementation in Deaf Education  

Intended Audience: 
  • ToDHH
  • Program Specialists for D/HH
  • Mental Health or Guidance Counselors for D/HH

At this time, only one registrant per district will be admitted. In order to provide equitable access to the content and materials, the first registrant from each Florida school district serving students who are deaf/hard of hearing will be admitted to the training, as determined by registration time stamps. Once RMTC-D/HH has received an applicant from a Florida school district, any additional registrants from that district will be added to a wait list, in order of the registration time stamps. If space allows, additional district staff may be accepted.

This training will NOT be recorded. You must be able to attend during the live session to attend.

Description:

Please join RMTC-D/HH for the Working with the Experts: Emotional Safety Skills Implementation in Deaf Education professional development.This interactive professional learning activity will include instruction and practice with assessment and goal development for interventions related to emotional safety skills. 

Participants will be expected to:

  • attend three (3) real-time virtual sessions,
  • complete an assessment on at least two students using the tools provided in the workshop,
  • develop goals/objectives for an IEP/IFSP based on data collected in the assessment for at least two students, and
  • submit data into the FDLRS Impact Database (FID) on at least two students. 

Learning Objectives:

Assessing Physical and Emotional Safety Skills in the DHH Learner

  • Objective 1: Teachers will assess a student using the assessment tools provided in the workshop.

IEP/IFSP Construction and Task Analysis

  • Objective 1: Teachers will write an IEP/IFSP goal based on the assessment they completed after Workshop 1.
  • Objective 2: Teachers will write a task analysis to determine how the goal should be scaffolded for the student who is D/HH.

Planning and Implementation of Emotional Safety Skills

  • Objective 1: Teachers will implement the four-step method for incorporating emotional safety skills into the academic curriculum based on the IEP and task analysis created in  Workshop 2.

Agenda

Trainers:

Jennifer A. L. Johnson, PhD is an educational psychologist at The Child Safety Collaborative LLC, based out of Dallas, Texas. She graduated from the University of North Texas, Department of Educational Psychology with a PhD in Special Education with concentration in emotional and behavioral disorders.

Dr. Johnson's doctoral research focused on emotional and physical safety curriculum development for children with disabilities, specifically deaf/hard of hearing children. She has also contributed to research in areas of bullying prevention, relational health, and research reform.

Dr. Johnson has experience as a Deaf Education teacher, Instructional Specialist in Special Education, teacher evaluator, and university teacher preparation instructor. Her passion is

helping families, schools, and community systems develop a culture of safety where healthy behavior and social skills develop and thrive.

Follow Up Activity:

In order to earn a certificate of completion, participants must complete eight (8) weeks of data collection and enter it in the FDLRS Impact Database (FID).

Technology Requirements:

Participants will need access to:

  • a newer computer (no more than five years old),
  • a high-speed internet connection (http://fast.com results should be over 5-10 Mbps.), and
  • a web camera with standard definition (480p or 360p) for effective participation.

In-Service Points:

If you wish to earn in-service credits towards the renewal of a Florida Educator’s Certificate, it is recommended that you contact your school district’s professional development office BEFORE beginning a course to verify the requirements you must fulfill. RMTC-D/HH will provide a certificate upon completion of the course and submission of any follow-up activity requirements in the FDLRS Impact Database (FID). The suggested inservice points for this training is up to 7 points based on attendance, completion of class assignments, and follow-up activities.

RMTC-D/HH is a discretionary project funded by the State of Florida, Department of Education, Bureau of Exceptional Student Education through federal assistance under IDEA Part B and through a cooperative agreement with the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind.

Activities and resources provided by RMTC-D/HH are available to professional staff who are currently working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing in the state of Florida.
