Mental Health Breakfast: Intro to Cultural Competency 

A solid foundation of cultural competency knowledge will be provided in this training in order to shift mindsets and decrease- traumatization of Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) with the greatest disparities in Elkhart and St. Joseph County.

As a result of this presentation, attendees will:

  • Understand the difference between cultural competence and cultural humility
  • Learn about current local disparities within Elkhart and St. Joseph County among BIPOC populations
  • Understand what implicit bias is and current misconceptions about African Americans and how these can influence our interactions
  • Identify what health equity is and how to increase it among BIPOC populations with the greatest needs

About the trainer:

Darial Sterling is The SOURCE’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coordinator. Darial has a Bachelor of Psychology from Ball State University and over 14 years of behavioral health experience. Darial works to build equitable and culturally responsive systems and understanding across the county and is the co-chair of Oaklawn’s  Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.
